How much weight do you think the human stomach can hold?

Asked by onesecondregrets (2591points) February 7th, 2010

1 lb? 2 lb? 15 lb?

What makes it so strong that it doesn’t tear or rip?

I think it depends on the person

It does rip in some cases. Some people have literally ate themselves to death. There is a capacity for how much food the stomach can hold. When someone expands their stomach to the point of rupture there’s nothing they can do about it. It can hold two to three litres.

Engorged, a stomach can hold two to three liters of food. Assuming this was all water (which is probably more dense than any other common food item), thats six or seven pounds.

Imagine a haggis eating contest. You have to put the whole thing in your stomach. People actually do this, you know.

Adam, the guy on Man Vs. Food, regularly consumes over 5 lbs of food in under an hour. He’s still alive – though, I have been watching him get progressively more… snuggly-looking since the show premiered.

@oxymoron wouldn’t you throw up before your stomach ripped?

@JONESGH – Sometimes. It depends on how bad you have abused your body before. It’s possible to make your gag reflex non-present.
