How can I apply different slide background in powerpoint on a mac?

I’m using office 2004 on a mac. I’m trying to apply different slide designs to specific slides. Yet, every time I do, it applies the design to all slides in the presentation. When working in windows, I recall having the option to apply the design to just that slide or all slides. Any thoughts?
