We have been planning a trip to Oz for a while now, but cannot make up our minds.
We are traveling with 2 kids (aged 2 and 5) in a small campervan with tent.
The timeperiod is roughly from the 1st of october till the 30th of november.
There are three scenarios we have in mind.
1. Travel from Brisbane to Thursday Island (north) and back.
2. Travel from Brisbane to Adelaide.
3. Travel from Perth to Broome.
Anyone have any advice?

Unfortunately you have chosen places that I am not really familiar with, so hopefully some other Aussies can help me out here.
1. Sounds good to me, the Great Barrier Reef is spectacular from what I hear, and it would give you a taste of many different aspects of Australia. You will get to see both urban and country Australia, and some amazing tourist hot spots like the Whitsundays.
2. Which route do you plan to travel? Going across country you would see a lot of outback, and not much else. I suggest you travel down the coast to Sydney, then cut across to either Melbourne or somewhere around Torquay (to save time, but you can go down the coast road) and travel the Great Ocean Road to Mt. Gambier, then off to Adelaide. This would probably be my choice, mostly because I am a little ignorant of the other two options, but the NSW north coast and the Great Ocean Road are spectacular.
3. I really can’t help you out with this one, WA is the only state I am yet to visit.
Which country are you from? What are you looking for? Someone from Japan or Hong Kong I would encourage to visit Coober Pedy to experience the outback way of life, because the city isn’t much different for them. Someone from Egypt or the like where they have huge deserts anyway I would point to Tasmania for the forests and incredible coastlines. It all depends on what you want to get out of your visit.
@FireMadeFlesh Thanks for your reply. We are from The Netherlands, and are planning to travel along the coast, since this is friendlier for our children we think.
We will dive into option 2 further.
Cheers.
The weather should be ok, I would do brisbane to thursday or broome- the weather will be much nicer and it will be a nicer trip. Keep in mind that there arent many services on thursday, like it you get hurt there it could be real bad. But that would be the funnest. Second choice would be perth to broome but that’s a real long trip for such little kids- I dpn’t know if you plan to fly to thursday but if you go in a boat it’s pretty far
Even though I’d personally do #3, I think the east coast is probably much better, especially if it’s your first time there. There are amazing beaches, beautiful scenery all over, good roads and places to stop.
I expect WA wouldn’t be that bad, though I haven’t been there myself so I wouldn’t know (that’s why I’d want to do that one).
Option #2 is through more inhabited areas and you could hit big cities like Sydney or Melbourne along the way (see the Opera House and so on). Depends on what you want really. They all sound good though and for what you probably have in mind, all three would work well.
Perth to Broome! We did the opposite of that in August and it was fantastic! Granted, that’s the only time I’ve been to Australia and certainly the only places I’ve been in Australia, but I still heartily and cheerfully recommend it.
I’ve only ever been to Perth out of those options. I loved Perth .. but then again.. I was a drunken sailor at the time so.. my opinion should be taken w/ a grain of salt and a shot of whateveryagot.
The first is the best option with the places you have chosen, otherwise you will spend most of your time driving through boring countryside instead of seeing lots of great scenery and sightseeing, etc.
Brisbane to Adelaide if you want to see Sydney and Melbourne and get in some famous landmarks such as harbour bridge and opera house. Brisbane to Thursday Island is not realistic unless your van is four wheel drive. More realistic is Brisbane to Cairns / Cape Tribulation and it is a great trip, you get in north Queensland with tropical rainforests and Great Barrier Reef. Perth to Broome if you want a great remote outback trip with almost no places to mention back home that they are likely to have heard of. And Perth is a great city.
