What would the continents look like in the future?

Asked by Bugabear (1712points) February 10th, 2010

After watching 2012, I was wondering what position the continents would be in about a million years from now.

Stuff will likely be all grafted together a or be a ton of tiny tiny tiny tiny little islands. All depends on how the geographical plates feel.

They have crashed into one big group then split along tectonic plate lines numerous times in the past. Pangaea was the last great conjunction, and that supercontinent split apart about 250 million years ago.

Pannotia, formed about 600 million years ago during the Proterozoic eon, and lasted until 540 million years ago. Before Pannotia, there was Rodinia, which lasted from about 1.1 billion years ago until about 750 million years ago. The exact configuration and geodynamic history of Rodinia are not nearly as well understood as Pannotia and Pangaea.

A million years isn’t a long time in geologic terms though, so don’t expect them to all bump back together that quickly.

Pretty sure they’ll only move about fifteen miles in one million years – and that’s pretty unimpressive. From what I’ve heard they only really shift an inch a year. ...I think I did the math right, but it is late and I am tired.

You have to ask a geologist….I have no idea.

Interesting. I found this on future locations. Pangaea Ultima is expected to form in about 250 million years.

In a million years from now? I’d probably expect them to be roughly in the same place they are now.

Mostly under water, probably.

I doubt us humans will still be here if/when Pangaea Ultima is formed, but imagine what it would be like for all of us in the world to be physically connected. Would there be peace or would there be war?

@erichw1504 Kind of shoots big holes in all the blather about filthy illegal aliens, doesn’t it. It would be poetic justice if we could catapult bigots like Tom Tancredo into that future world.
