What are some quotes about military/war and athletics?
It’s for a debate, on the propositon that military and athletics is more important than arts, mathematic and such. Does anyone know a quote about war and athletics?

I don’t think I could, in good conscience, supply such a quote even if I knew one. The military and athletics are not more important than arts and mathematics. Although all four take inspiration from each other.
Well, considering that it’s based on Ancient Greece, war and athletics was pretty important. I didn’t mention it up there, my bad. I know nowadays it’s not.
Probably “heartless and barbaric”. Usually from peace lover citizens point of view.
Two sources I would look at to find some real goodies. Both were compulsory reading for me in younger days. First, look at ‘The Art of War’ by Sun-Tzu, and second, ‘The Prince’ by Machiavelli. Both are very old works and filled with great quotes that can be used.
“Old soldiers never die, they just fade away” was a phrase taken from an old army ballad.

You’d better find something to beat “The pen is mightier than the sword” if that’s your position.
haha @CyanoticWasp , yes, I need a quote that will beat that good old one. Maybe I should just make one up and see if it sounds professional enough :S
As long as you attribute it to yourself, go ahead. Putting words into famous dead peoples’ mouths is immoral at worst, a tad morbid at best.
Pro football is like nuclear warfare. There are no winners, only survivors.
Frank Gifford
I know absolutely nothing about pro football but Google is my friend.
Winning isn’t everything. It’s the only thing.
Vince Lombardi
Those are some real cool quotes. Did you get them from google or did you know them already?
If you don’t already know the Vince Lombardi quote, then you don’t know any, I’d say. I like @Adagio,‘s too.
The battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton – Probably not really said by the Duke of Wellington
@jaytkay That quote is wonderful, by far the best, I’m sure I’ve read it before somewhere. (Afterthought: The officers went to Eton but something tells me that the playing fields of other less notable schools deserve a mention also) :)
“We do more before 9 a.m. than most people do all day.” – an old U.S. Army advertising slogan / catch phrase.
@Adagio The officers went to Eton but something tells me that the playing fields of other less notable schools deserve a mention also
Funny you should mention that, when I was looking for the Wellington line, I came across this from 1941:
“While it is said the Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton, it can be answered now that the Battle of Britain was won on the playing fields of the [State] schools of England.” – Labor M.P. Charles Ammon

All I can really offer is that the arts are overrated, and that art, war, mathematics, and athletics are all inextricably intertwined.
My own speculation/observation is that Sport evolved from War.
