Is there a way to determine which day google decided to map out everything on google earth?

Asked by RandomMrdan (7439points) February 18th, 2010

I’m trying to locate my car based on the day, if at all possible. I’m pretty sure I can narrow down my search to where I may have been on this particular day.

I’ve checked my apartment, place of work, and a couple other places, but I think it’d be fun to try and locate my car.

Anyone know how to find out which day the satellite shots were taken?

I believe it is a process that takes years to accomplish. Not a day.

I know people that think google earth is live. If they go outside they can wave at the sky and you will see it.

I finally got a pic of my driveway on google….uh huh. Showed a vehicle and a boat that we haven’t had for two years.

@ChazMaz I’m waving! Can you see me???

Microsoft is actually looking into live video on their maps.

haha, yeah, I’ve found my dads house, my grand parents, my apartment… but alas I can’t find my car… I’ve even checked my work.

On Google Earth, at the bottom left-hand corner of the window, it’ll say, for example, “Imagery Dates: Jan 29, 2008 – Feb 29, 2008”.
That’s the day that they decided to take those pictures.

What I want to know is….WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR CAR? I mean, it’s one thing to lose your keys, but something else all together to misplace your car!

haha yeah! Maybe I can get a satellite shot of the guy who stole my car! Take a screen shot and submit it to the local police to arrest him and get my car back for me.

RandomMrdan's avatar

@Sarcasm I’m using google earth on my iphone, and I’m not seeing any dates… but that’s an entire month window, would be a bit hard to narrow it down…

Val123's avatar

O. Somebody stole it. You didn’t tell us that in the details!

RandomMrdan's avatar

haha, I was kidding, no one stole my car =P

You could have been on your way to somewhere when the image was taken of your car and given that one month window, I’d imagine it would be very hard to find.

RandomMrdan's avatar

@erichw1504 that thought crossed my mind, but I could probably narrow the search to the route to and from places I would have normally been. haha, I have a lot of free time lately.

Val123's avatar

Just curious then….why do you want to find your car? Just to find it? Your best bet would be to keep an eye on your driveway, but like I said, when Google finally made a pic of our house available it showed vehicles we hadn’t owned in a couple of years.

erichw1504's avatar

@RandomMrdan Well, since you have a lot of free time, I guess the best thing to do is to just keep looking!

RandomMrdan's avatar

haha thanks @erichw1504

I’m just entertaining myself, finding my car, as well as friends cars. I guess you could say I’m bored!

Would you find my husband while you’re at it? He’s somewhere’s south of Wichita. Red car.

erichw1504's avatar

@RandomMrdan Check this site out if you want to see some of the strangest things on Google Earth.

Val123's avatar

? I don’t see anything so strange…..not even Kansas.

Val123's avatar

@RandomMrdan I couldn’t get it to zoom in to see anything….what did I miss?

Different spots are taken on different days. In my area, there was even a clear delineation (for a while) which had snow-covered ground on one side, and green trees and grass on the other.

I found my car in front of the place where I live, and also the place where I used to live before this.

@val123 landmarks, and things of that nature. Things people put in fields to organize words, nude beaches being blurred out! haha, stuff like that.

Looking at the pic of my house on Google Earth I managed to narrow it down to a Thursday evening, in summer, within about a 5 year gap. I know this because the trees in the garden were all green, and my mate’s white car was parked outside the house, and he always visited on a Thursday. Then he got rid of the white car and bought a blue one.

@downtide – That’s pretty good. :) My best guess for mine was on a Tuesday morning, because the trash was out and not collected yet.
