Do you have any suggestions for a gift?

Asked by partyparty (9167points) February 22nd, 2010

My neighbours will be celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary shortly, and I have been invited to their party.

Do you have any suggestions as to what I could possibly get for them.

All I can think of is ruby wine glasses or champagne flutes, but I suppose everyone else will have the same idea.

Bring a pair of 40-year-olds, one for each of them.

People usually appreciate gifts that they want; but would never purchase for themselves.
The restaurant gift card sounds great.

@CyanoticWasp-Now that’s just funny ;)

I think the gift card sounds nice or a nice picture frame to put a picture of them in on their 40th Anniversary.

@DrBill Lovely idea. Any suggestions for a small gift to include with it?
@BoBo1946 OK… what is Advil? (I am sure it must be something amusing)
@lucillelucillelucille Sorry he already has a hearing aid LOLL
@CyanoticWasp Good idea, but I think I would keep the 40 year olds for myself. Any other suggestions?

I like the restaurant idea. Another thought along the same line would be movie gift cards if you know they like to go to the movies.

One of the most unique gifts….I think….would be to give them a pair of mandarin ducks (figures, not the real things.)

In China, a pair of mandarin ducks is a symbol of fidelity and long marriages. You can find mandarin ducks in every possible type of design and substance (cloisonee, wood, resin, jade, porcelain). Some of them are simple and some of them are elaborate. They are also reasonably priced. Just go to Ebay and type in “mandarin ducks feng shui” in the search engine. www.ebay.com You can also find Asian scrolls with paintings of mandarin ducks which are also quite lovely. Depending on the time, if you have two weeks, then you can order from China (they are quite prompt——check the feedback on the vendor). If you are pressed for time, you can find a vendor in the USA that has these. Be sure to check the dimensions as sometimes they ducks may be tiny and sometimes they may be larger.

If there is no time, then consider giving them a flowering tree or a Japanese maple that they can plant in their garden in spring to also commemorate their anniversary.

I was just thinking of something a bit different as a gift.

Hope this helps….!

That would make them at least in their sixties. I’m sixty so I say get them a hooker.

What about getting the neighbors together and going in on one gift together?

I’m 53, and have reached the point where I’m trying to offload “stuff.” Think about their lifestyle. Do they eat out a lot? Garden? Take a lot of driving trips to visit family/friends? One of the best gifts I gave this year was a Magellan GPS; all recipients comment about how much they love it, and use it all the time. (I bought the one with the fewest features).

Easy, get something eatable, like bread. It will be cheaper and more appreciatable than something tacky that most people get for others when they don’t know what they like in the first place.
