My phone shows it has service, but says Emergency Calls Only.

Asked by justn (1382points) February 22nd, 2010

This has always confused me. I supposedly can make an emergency call (to 911 I would guess) but I can’t make a call to other numbers. Can someone share their knowledge about this perplexing little situation?

EDIT: I guess I wasn’t clear enough, this doesn’t happen all the time, just when I am in remote locations and wouldn’t expect to have any service. When I’m in town I can make and receive calls just fine.

Check your phone settings you may have accidently changed something.

Your account probably got blocked by the service provider for an outstanding account or you have roamed out of your home service area and your account is not authorized to make the connection other than 911 calls.

it might be your SIM card… it could be acting up… you should probably call or go to your phone providers store

@justn if that is the case, then you are basically threading in an area that is covered by another service provider which your service provider has not established roaming reciprocity. The other company will allow emergency calls to get through but not regular calls.

@tamkli3 if it was a SIM card issue, the phone would not connect to the Emergency Service at all.

@njnyjobs Ok, that makes some sense. Like I mentioned, the area I was in was pretty remote and my phone would jump between showing Emergency Calls Only and not. When it didn’t show it my phone said it wasn’t in its home network before I sent an MMS and it had trouble getting through. Thanks for the insight.

Is this an iPhone ?

If so, you need to to a reset. This has happened to me from time to time for apparently no reason. A hard reset always clears it right up. Are you familiar with how to do that ?

If it’s not an iPhone, I have no idea.

Sounds like me when i forgot to pay the bill..

@njnyjobs when i phone was acting up all it did was go straight to ‘Emergency calls only’ even though I had signal and all… It was because my SIM card was acting up, and i found that out because i took it to my providers store.

@tamkli3 if you actually read all the relevant information regarding the OP’s concern before offering your well-thought response, you will then realize that it is not applicable to the situation at all.

Someone stole your phone’s SIM card.
