What are your experiences and opinions of Wiikey or other modchips for Wii?

Asked by MissAnthrope (21511points) February 22nd, 2010

I acquired a hand-me-down PAL Wii for Christmas, so I’m new to the whole Wii thing. I live in the US and will probably have to import my games, but I’m wondering about modchips so I can get NTSC games.

I was researching this today and came across the Wiikey, which sounds pretty awesome and it also gets rid of the region code restrictions.

Have any of you modded your Wii? If you’ve modded your Wii, could you talk about what you chose and why you like it? Any guesses on whether I could get someone to install it for me and what it might cost?

Any other input, pros, cons, experience, would be good, too. Thanks. :)

Softmod it.

Search up the Wii Homebrew channel, then get a backup loader (which allows you to play games from any region). It’s super simple, but will take you about an hour or so.

Wow, is it really that simple? Thanks. :)

Totally is. Installing the Wii Homebrew Channel itself should take, literally, like 15 minutes. From there, you can install some emulators. And other stuff.

It’s the backup loader that will take a few. It can get a bit complicated, but I don’t insult your intelligence. :)

Just give me a shout if you run into issue.

That’s the best news ever. I’ll have to check this out for sure!

Yep. Best of all, it’s free. And you don’t need to go in opening your Wii, soldering stuffs.

I know! I love both of those points. :D
