Does anyone have suggestions on a good wheat variety to grow on a small scale?

Asked by jealoustome (1514points) February 24th, 2010

I want to grow wheat in my backyard this spring/summer. I have an area about 30ftx25ft in which to grow. Has anyone tried growing wheat for home consumption? Any suggestions on the best variety for home milling? for high yield (organically?)

The MotherEarth News is a great resource. I searched for grow your own wheat and found a lot of useful websites.

@YARNLADY Thanks. Yes, I’ve done online research. I was just hoping to talk one-on-one with someone who had personal experience.

Since no one else answered….

I guess it would depend on what your climate and soil is like where you live. We don’t grow wheat where I live so I don’t have any first hand experience with it. You might find it helpful to search for a local organic farmers’ association or consult a local university (if it has an agriculture department). In the book by Janine Bensus (sp?) called Biomimicry, she references an organization located somewhere in central U.S. that studies wheat. I think it was called The Land Institute or something like that. They might have some good advice.

Don’t laugh, I am serious. Perhaps you could take a cue from the Amish or Mennonites.

They farm larger areas, but I believe still they practice organic farming. Although they would not call it that.
