Installing a second OS on my PC?

Asked by XOIIO (18328points) February 25th, 2010

So I was parying attention to my computers startup and it said for options press escape, so I did. I was pleased to find that that was the menu to chose the OS I am going to boot up. I want to know what OS would be good to install, and it’s features. My current is Windoes 7 and I was considering XP but decided not to. What should I install, and do you have any advice on how to do it? I know it involves windows partitioner but that’s pretty much it. I would like an OS that is free and that I could download.

Also, do you know where I could get adobe photoshop for free? I don’t really have the patience for a torrent, but maybe a survey site or something?

The best supported version of linux currently: http://www.ubuntu.com/
I use it on my university laptop, for work/notes/research. Linux is great – and ubuntu is a great way to be exposed to it with zero knowledge.

As for photoshop, you could run it in linux under wine – but you could also try GIMP – comes pre-installed. Or you can use the package manager to install it. Most apps are free, and easily found from the inherent package manager.

As for the boot manager, you could either use the BIOS, or let Linux handle it. Their installation wizard is quite simple. (Much simpler than installing windows ironically). I haven’t dual-booted in a very long time. My desktop runs Windows 7. Any secondary operating systems I either run on another computer in the network, then VNC to it, or run them through vmware (virtualization).

I have GIMP already, I just like the photoshop UI better and have used it more.

What sort of apps does ubuntu have? I want some really cool stuff on my other os, more techy. Maybe a wifi radar or password cracker?

@XOIIO try http://www.gimpshop.com/ – makes it feel more like photoshop if it’s the GUI that’s bothering you.

@XOIIO are you the next and upcoming script-kiddy? Hehe.
For that sort of stuff I’d give http://www.backtrack-linux.org/ a try. (It’s based on ubuntu, which in turn is based on debian.)

Backtrack looks cool, I’ll need to look into it more and get a backup hard drive first though.

LINUX!!!!!!

Why install two different Microsoft OS’s? They’ll probably just compete with each other in some unexpected way and kill themselves off in a heap of blue dust.

Ubuntu is super popular. Fedora is always on the cutting edge. There are many many other “flavors”.

Ugh Photoshop is too heavy for me. I heart lurve? gimp.

I know this thread is slowing changing into a ‘good image editing’ thread so I’ll small type this
I’ve used Aviary for a while, its an online based photo, vector, effects, colour and audio editor very similar to GIMP/Ps with the ability to use other users source files, etc; as well as uploading your own projects to he community

As far as a second OS’ go I would hackintosh that biatch; its a fun weekend project and, as a fan boy, I enjoy OS X.
