Don’t starve yourself. It will backfire.Walk.Get out every day and walk.

Exercise. It raises your metabolic activity and keeps it higher long after you stop the actual workout.

davidbetterman's avatar

Walking is so easy, and really works! 2 miles a day is incredible for you.

tedibear's avatar

Exercise, exercise, exercise. And be sure to eat right.

njnyjobs's avatar

Simple daily chores can contribute to increasing your body’s activity . . take the stairs instead of elevator or escalator. . . park at the furthest (safe) point of the parking lot. If possible, walk to places instead of driving.

TooBlue's avatar

Eat small meals frequently, instead of filling yourself up on 2 or 3 large meals per day.

I bought the book Eat Fat, Lose Fat wich is all about coconut oil and products, more palatable than canola oil maybe, i haven’t done either yet.

davidbetterman's avatar

Don’t eat canola oilis actually derived from the rapeseed, a member of the mustard family which is generally unfit for human consumption and was once more commonly used as a potent pesticide and lubricant, among other things.

faye's avatar

@davidbetterman I’m going to need some proof of this? Alberta has beautiful canola fields in late summer. Why are people raising this to sell if it’s poison. Mustard plants are not poison?

tedibear's avatar

Go ahead and have your canola oil.

I recently saw an interesting thing online somewhere…one of my homepages…about the “starvation mode” the body goes into when not fed regularly, which others have mentioned above, re eating several small meals instead of 2–3 large ones, etc. This article suggested eating something immediately upon awakening…I’ve never been a regular breakfast eater…also, drinking something cold rather than hot. These two things bring your body out of the “starvation mode,” and kick your metabolism up. The only thing I can stomach when I first awaken and go to the kitchen to start my coffee, is a banana…for some reason, a banana seems palatable first thing in the morning. Then I wash it down with a big chugalug of orange juice, or sometimes cold milk, right from the half-gallon jug in the fridge (it’s a guy thing).
I’m not a health professional, nor do I claim any expertise in this field, but the whole “starvation mode,” eat breakfast (even the word, breakfast = break fast) early, and the the thing about ingesting something cold will increase metabolic rate just seem to make sense to me.

faye's avatar

I remember when the name was changed from rapeseed oil to canola. We were told it was for esthetics as rape is a most unhappy word. I don’t know about any genetic involvement as this was 40 years ago or so.

Work your large muscles…thinks power squats, upper body power presses followed by intense I mean high intensity interval anything…walk, run, bike swim. Got to get that motor running and you will be burning fuel like a machine!!

phoebusg's avatar

Well, since nobody mentioned it. Making sure your body is well hydrated. Metabolism depends on water levels directly. So, carry a water bottle, remember to drink water at home. Be wary of substances that dehydrate you and make up for that.

Even a small drop in water will have an effect – especially in your brain (synaptic activities are also metabolic, and water-dependent).

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

The beginning to a good metabolism every day is to eat a nutritious and protein + fiber rich breakfast – it’ll start you off on the correct track for the day…eat smaller meals and more often so that your body keeps working on it…

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@davidbetterman okay, if you type in ‘canola oil is unhealthy’ into google, google will give you articles (and the first one seems like a random person made a website, mentioned a random person who’s an ‘expert on fats’ apparently and you think it’s legit?) that support that but don’t have to have merit to them.

davidbetterman's avatar

So don’t read that one. Read the others.
However that first one states, “The following is adapted from reportage beginning in 1996 by Tom Valentine under the trade names of Carotec, Search for Health, and True Health based in Naples, Florida, and Mary Enig, Ph.D., who is the current world authority on trans–fatty acids. www.enig.com A short piece from Acres USA, March 2001 acts as an introduction to the report.”

And further down, ”Genetically Manipulated Canola Seed Gets Loose In The Fields

“Monsanto announced in April 1997, that it was recalling genetically engineered canola seed because an unapproved gene slipped into the batch by mistake. The canola seed had been genetically manipulated to resist the herbicide toxicity of Roundup, which is Monsanto’s top money making product. The recall involved 60,000 bags containing two types of canola seed, which is enough to plant more than 700,000 acres. Both types of seed have the wrong gene in them. The genes in the recalled seed have not been approved for human consumption.

But hey, what do you care? Go ahead and ingest all the poisonous Canola Oil you want.

Further down:

“On January 26, 1998 Omega Nutrition, one of the major producers of organic, cold pressed oils for the health food store market published a press release. The release states that if you are cooking with canola oil of any quality, you might as well be using margarine. In the case of refined canola oil, the important health benefits have been processed away — leaving the consumer with the nutrition of say, white flour — and, dangerous trans–fatty acids have replaced a lot of the beneficial omega 3 essential fatty acids.”

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@davidbetterman right, that’s what I did read – this Mary Enig…who said she’s the world authority? and the dates, look at them – one is 1996 (in the world of science, that is eons ago) and 2001 (still not current).

And a single instance of an unapproved gene being slipped into a batch by mistake doesn’t mean canola oil is poisonous. I don’t ingest Canola oil, but I do wanna know why you’re so pissed off about it.

davidbetterman's avatar

Have youj any idea what ingesting one erroneous man-made gene can do to you? I think not, or you would not be shilling for it.
And it isn’t just the gene manipulation, which as vegans, or at least with a vegan/vegetarian in your household I would think you would be more concerned…

Canola is not the name of a natural plant but a made-up word, from the words “Canada” and “oil”. Canola is a genetically engineered plant developed in Canada from the Rapeseed Plant, which is part of the mustard family of plants. According to AgriAlternatives, The Online Innovation, and Technology Magazine for Farmers, ”By nature, these rapeseed oils, which have long been used to produce oils for industrial purposes, are… toxic to humans and other animals”.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@davidbetterman I have a degree in biology and am perfectly knowledgeable about genetics, thanks – I see nowhere in my answer an example of ‘shilling’ as you say it. What we are concerned as vegans is not your issue (but thanks for the concern, it’s so sincere). I am finding that you are not reading what I’m writing, because I mentioned that we do not ingest it.

davidbetterman's avatar

Having a degree in biology is meaningless if you haven’t studied this subject.
Of ourse i read that you don’t ingest it (I don’t ingest Canola oil, but I do wanna know why you’re so pissed off about it.)

Having just read that JPS is a vegitarian in another thread here, I merely and most considerately included that advice.
Your attempt to insult me (but thanks for the concern, it’s so sincere) is juvenile and ludicrous.

But back to the meat of the oil, ”By nature, these rapeseed oils, which have long been used to produce oils for industrial purposes, are… toxic to humans and other animals”

If you have some sort of proof that this is not so, it wold be interesting and gratifying to read it, instead of just your personal unqualified and uncertified opinion.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@davidbetterman the only reason I mentioned the degree was because you assumed I don’t know about genetic modification..otherwise, it is irrelevant. JPS and I are both vegans, as are our children.
The burden of proof is not on me because I am not passionate about this issue (but it’s good that you are…it’s good to have passions) – I haven’t looked into it enough but am just responding to the ‘sources’ you provided and keep citing – I don’t find them valid.

davidbetterman's avatar

I heard about the Canola Oil fiasco years ago.

JeanPaulSartre's avatar

@davidbetterman Seems like it’s not naturally poisonous, but that oils extracted from genetically engineered plants are poisonous.

here is a source that addresses someone else saying exactly what you’re saying (weird, are your ideas plagiarized because your comment is exactly what is written elsewhere)

Canola stands for Canadian Oilseed, Low-Acid. It is a cultivar bred for a lower acid content to make it more palatable. @davidbetterman you are off-topic.

Lots of exercise and healthy eating.

Its ok everyone it seems that everytime I ask a question mister @davidbetterman he likes to start arguments with someone else on a slightly ineffective topic. Just ignore him please.

davidbetterman's avatar

@Zaxwar91 LOL… I didn’t start anything. If you actually read what was happening, you will see that @Simone_De_Beauvoir and @JeanPaulSartre started the whole shebang. Have a lovely day.
But please, do go out and begin a diet including Canola Oil. That should help your motabolism, whatever that is.

JeanPaulSartre's avatar

I didn’t start anything… I finished it, looks like.

I would suggest lifting weights, you develope better muscle tone there fore you will burn more calories and increase your metablism.

Zaxwar91's avatar

Lol @davidbetterman, ur almost as big of a smartass as i am. i wasnt just referring to just the canola oil argument, which by the way, you were correct, but also to the other question that i asked a few days ago about joining the Navy. Your very short comment about killing people started a very long and heated debate. So much, that the fluther mods had to ask the other questionaires to get back on track. You have a nack at getting an argument going about things that are either barley related to the topic or has nothing to do with the question at all. I have no problem with you answering the question, because that it of course why i asked them. But i would like a direct answer which this time u actually gave. By the way, I dont like Canola oil anyway and is often said to be very unhealthy for you.

Slowly start building muscle. Muscle mass, age and genetics are primary factors in how high your metabolism is. The age and genetics part we can’t control, but the muscle mass part we can. I would suggest getting some light ankle weights and walking about thirty minutes a day with them on. Do some light lifting with 5lb dumbells too. Watch your sugar, refined carb, and fat intake as well. (Just to be safe though, you should talk to your doc about beginning this exercise/diet regime)

Good luck.

Eat plenty of small meals throughout the day. 200–300 calories, are a good start. I eat hard boiled eggs (80 cal), kashi cereal bars (100–150 cal), protein shakes (muscle milk is amazing with fat-free milk) and quaker oatmeal with wheat germ is extremely filling. You can buy some above-average coffee and drink it black (no additives), there’s about 2 cal per serving of coffee (4 oz. I think). Any raw vegetables you can bear, apples, bananas, etc. Just make sure it’s convenient and you enjoy it, other wise you won’t bother to stick with it. Carbs from vegetables and fruits are great. And stay away from high-fructose corn syrup. As a test, I stuffed myself with raw broccoli, then I ate some sweets and was hungry again. That’s in my head, but high-fructose corn syrup blocks the receptors that alert you when you’re full. That’s why you can eat crap loads of this cheap, delicious ingredient. As for working out, 20–30 of uphill walking, which uses the same part of your brain as running. Any body weight activities, squats, chair dips, planks, pushups, pullups, etc. are good compound exercises. Don’t workout for more than 45 min. at a time, instead, be as intensive as you can for 20–30 min. Your body will conserve energy if you stress your body for prolonged amounts of time.

Eat often, healthy, well portioned. And workout with the highest intensity you’re comfortable with.

Increase your metabolism by eating a well balanced diet more often together with an exercise routine (any form of regular physical activity). Or, start smoking to increase your heart rate and therefore, your metabolism…true story! Lol! Of course, you’ll probably die of heart failure, stroke, or cancer but you probably will anyway…being a little sarcastic! Be active! Be active! Be active!
