Has anyone here (or their kids, friends) ever auditioned for American Idol or a reality show?

Asked by Zen_Again (9936points) February 27th, 2010

If you have, I am curious whether it is anything like what we see on the weekly show. What’s it like to really wait for hours and hours, to see thousands of talented people go in and out, and finally to meet and audition for the likes of Simon Cowell et al?

Or if your experience is from another Reality show, what was that like?

i know a guy who knows a guy who was on xfactor and got told no. but thats about it.

so im told, there are actually many judges that will audition you, and you only get to see the main ones if you are really really bad or failry good.

I know a few people who have auditioned for talent-based reality tv shows, but I haven’t spoken to any of them about it. @poisonedantidote is right in saying that most people don’t get to see the famous judges. You see some others first, and they are the ones who decide whether you’re worth putting in front of the cameras.

I imagine the ‘waiting for hours and hours, to see thousands of talented people go in and out’ part would be just like any other audition, but huge.

@ragingloli I have to agree with you there.

It’s not a reality show, but I once went to NYC to try to be on “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” with a friend of mine. We tried to find out as much about the process ahead of time because we couldn’t spend the night in the city, but they really don’t tell you a lot about what to expect. First, we had to take a written test with a bunch of other people. After the test, we were told that only people who got all of the answers right would get to audition for the cameras. We both knew we hadn’t gotten perfect scores. We were also told we’d have to wait a couple of hours, sit in the audience while a segment of the show was filmed, and then finally hear who had passed the test. The more we talked about it, the less we liked the idea of sitting through the filming. The people at the show said it would take a few hours at least, which would have us getting home in the middle of the night. Then we learned that even if one of us was accepted as a contestant on the show, we’d be put on a “wait list” and might not even be picked for a show that season.

We ended up blowing off the whole thing and spending the day running around the city before taking the train home.

Ex-co-worker of mine was on Jerry Springer. She played the part of “angry girlfriend” or something like that. I guess they go for “dramatic and willing to make an arse of yourself” over “true acting talent.” :)

My mum used to work with a girl who auditioned to be on Big Brother, she didn’t get on though. A friend of mine auditioned for X Factor but, again, didn’t get on TV. I also know a guy who recently auditioned for The Weakest Link and we are still waiting to hear whether he will be on the show.
