Has anyone here (or their kids, friends) ever auditioned for American Idol or a reality show?

If you have, I am curious whether it is anything like what we see on the weekly show. What’s it like to really wait for hours and hours, to see thousands of talented people go in and out, and finally to meet and audition for the likes of Simon Cowell et al?
Or if your experience is from another Reality show, what was that like?
