How the bleedin' heck do I produce a Euro symbol on an American HP Pavilion?

Asked by MissAnthrope (21511points) February 28th, 2010

It’s my mom’s and I’m not sure the exact model, but it was bought less than 6 months ago. I’ve Googled the hell out of this and nothing works.

She really needs to be able to type a Euro sign in business correspondence. Please help!

€ Hold down the ALT key and while holding it down type 0128 on the number pad… release ALT and there it is.

@JeanPaulSartre You Frenchies are good for more than just philosophy. :-)

@JeanPaulSartre – Thanks.. it looks like CTRL+ALT+E works in MS Word 2007, as well. (I’d been trying it in non-MS programs)

Also, on a Windows machine there’s a handy program (in Programs > Accessories > System Tools) called Character Map – it lets you copy and paste out just about any character and tells you the ALT key combination in the lower right if there is one when you select it.

@janbb It’s true… from putting all those accents on letters. lol.

@MissAnthrope Good! Glad you’ve got it working.

@jaytkay – GA.. actually, I do it, too, but my mom is a bit of a pain in the butt and often declares computer-related things as “too complicated” and just refuses to do them, despite how easy it really is.. I had this argument with her over an email template.. I’m like, how hard is it to switch between two windows and cut and paste? Anyway, it’s apparently too hard and she keeps insisting her computer at home has the ability to evoke the € with a two-stroke alt/ctrl-whatever combo.

Anyway, everything was “too complicated” and I had to settle on making a text file on her desktop with the € symbol in it.

Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V never failed me….

@JeanPaulSartre Wow, I always thought that there were special keyboards for each language….In Europe, do you really have to go to the charmap every time you need an accent mark over a letter?

janbb's avatar

There are different keyboards in Europe. I’ve used one in France but not to type French so I don’t know about the accent marks but the damned “q” was where the “e” is supposed to live and my q-mails looked awfully funny!

@lilikoi Yeah, they look different – there are ways to do the accents on other keys: shift+2, Shift+7, etc. Here’s a picture http://bblfish.net/tmp/2004_09_29/titanium_azerty_keyboard.jpg
