Whether you like it or not, the weather is here to stay. There will always be some “blips” in the stats, but the supposed drought they we have been experiencing here according to the green doom merchants has been replaced with constant rain. It has rained so much that I have not had to top up our swimming pool this summer – it has been constantly overflowing. It feels more like living in England that Australia. My backyard looks like the set for a jungle movie – my Mango trees have almost doubled in size in one year. To top it off, as we are approaching Autumn, the flora thinks that it is spring – there are new blooms and blossoms everywhere.

@ShipwrecksInSand, what is your opinion if you don’t mind my asking?

Nature. It doesn’t mean anything just because there was some big events in a small amount of time. You could use this about anything: school shootings, terrorist attacks, celebrity deaths etc.

Is an earthquake considered a weather issue?

ShipwrecksInSand's avatar

@kevbo, well i was brought up muslim so my instant reaction to it is that god commands it..i still believe that but WHY is the question..i agree with Blackberry..the weather is constantly changing..so it may just be another coincedence.

It’s just one more piece of evidence of global warming. It’s been cold and snowy in the US, but that is due to a stronger than normal El Nino in the Pacific. Globally, November, 2009 was the warmest November since records were kept, and this January set a record for Januarys.

Global warming stirs the atmosphere, moving the jet streams around and setting up more extremes of hot, dry, cold, wet, snowy and what-have-you weather. The Climatologists told us that back when they first warned of the global warming trend, but appartenly very few people were listening. Now that their predictions are coming true, the denier camp is trying to use the accuracy of their warnings as proof it’s a hoax. Sad.

There is nothing new under the sun. Weather happens. We can’t control it. Go figure.

I don’t know. I don’t know anything about science and he Earth to determine whether this is abnormal or not. I reckon natural disasters have, and will always occur, but I suppose global warming can’t be ignored either.
Just sad and unfortunate that it creates so much death.

I’m just waiting for the Super Volcano in Yellowstone to blow.

I think the recent geological activity is just one of those things, I would be surprised if, unlike the weather, man has much capacity to affect geological activity at this point in our history, unless we were really trying of course. The weather on the other hand, that’s almost certainly to be at least partly down to our activity, and now we have giant icebergs to fuck up the climate too.

I think global warming is accelerating the natural cycle.

I don’t know much about most places, but we get snow in north eastern US pretty much all winter. The seasons are still the same as ever. Tho we got a lil bit more snow this year as to the last few it is cyclic. 12 years ago we had a winter just like this one. I think people are way too worried about it. I also think the global warming idea is a way to make money.

Mother Nature is very unpredictable sometimes. That’s how it has always been and that is how it will always be.

In simple terms, we’ve broken the planet.

The near unanimous weight of scientific opiion is that climate change is real. The people who suggest that the winter storms which have hammered eastern Canada and the eastern United States are proof that climate change is not happening are just goofballs. For one thing, in Canada it’s not abnormal. What has been happening this year is that the warm Pacific air, aided by El Nino, has been successfully battling the Arctic cold and pushing more of it farther east than normal. Once it crosses the Canadian Rockies it hits the Canadian Shiled which is part of the prairies which cover the middle part of the USA. Then there is nothing to stop it as it sweeps down to the southeast. Correspondingly, here in British Columbia we have had less snow than at any time in the last 30 years. At the Winter Olympics they had to truck in snow and they were battling warm weather every step of the way for the outdoor events.

my opinion is that ever since we got broadband internet, people think anything that happened pre-1995 doesn’t exist.

Do some research. (and not Wikipedia.) Find out what’s actually been going on. Severe tornadoes, earthquakes, volcanoes, all of it has been happening for hundreds of years and at roughly the same rate as it’s happening now. I’m not a global warming denier, but no, we don’t have more earthquakes now than we did before, and if we did, its not because someone used too much spray on deodorant.

Watch out Cali. Perpare your emergency kits.

Really. It will happen.

@tinyfaery Agreed. We are overdue actually…
