Do you use Internet Explorer? I’ve been using Mozilla Firefox for a few years now and I don’t get half the popups my sister complains about (she’s using Internet Explorer). Though it does sound like this annual security check thing might have done something to your system. Do you have any antivirus/antimalware programs?
The annual security chck might have actually been a banner, and hence some sort of malware. That aside: use Firefox, with ABP installed. I get 3 pop-ups a week tops and only in sites like megaupload that pretty much require you to see them since they open by clicking download links.
If you use firefox, click the tools tab atop all pages…
Then go to the bottom and click options
Then click content
Make sure the block Pop Up Windows is check marked
I think you have spy and malware on your computer. I always recommend PCtools to clean your PC and keep your pop up blockers turned on in your browser. Also, internet explorer sucks and could recommend something like safari or mozilla firefox.
If you want to use IE then get Zone Alarm, even the free version is good at blocking pop ups. Though you have to cofigure it quite a bit at the biginning until it builds a file of all the pop ups attacking your computer but that is not too bad, you can even have it run in the back ground but it might block stuff automatically you want to view, but it is very good.
If you want to avoid malware the first step is to get rid of flash.
McAfee is a great pop up blocker, and it helps to keep your computer safe all together. It will inform you if something like a virus or smaller comes up in your computer, and all you have to do is let it filter the virus out.
Like many people here, I use Firefox. That alone cuts down on the pop-up ads by >90%.
@Lightlyseared I wish that were possible, but many websites won’t function without Flash. Some you’ll just lose the movie frames, but others will lose the entire page.
of course moving to firefox is part of the solution. You are already infected. Install malware bytes with great haste. http://www.malwarebytes.org/ Take defaults and do a full scan remove as directed. This must be done regardless of the browser as long as you run windows. I recommend bi-weekly. Microsoft offers their security essentials http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/ which is pretty good realtime scanner. Be prepared to validate your copy of windows. Time is of the essence as you are already infected.
Forgot to mention, switching to linux prevents malwares altogether
@jerv I surf the net on my iphone and I don’t miss flash one bit. I haven’t got it intstalled on my desktop either and the only thing that bothers me is is the constant nagging of the flash auto installer.
