Any Japanese Holidays coming up?

Asked by Bellumbri (115points) March 2nd, 2010

I am the vice president of my school’s Japanese club, and since the Prez is having some difficulty and I am about to be kicked off the computer, I have to humbly ask this community of flutherers.

So yes, a Japanese holiday coming up, or any traditions for around this time of year that may be applicable to a group of Highschoolers would be just what I need to know about. Thanks!

Girls Day is tomorrow.

And shouldn’t you already know this if you are an officer of a Japanese club???

Hina Matsuri (Doll Festival) is celebrated on March 3. It’s a celebration for young Japanese girls, wishing them a healthy and successful life. Japanese homes with girls are adorned with dolls, and girls are given small gifts. “Chirashi” is eaten on that day, which is a dish made of rice, seafood, and vegetables. There is a similar holiday for boys, celebrated on May 5, called Tango No Sekku, or Feast of Banners, to wish that boys grow up to be strong and successful men. Homes are adorned with “carp” banners and Samurai warrior dolls.

White Day is on March 14th (not terribly old-school, but hey).
They celebrate the Spring Equinox, around March 20th. One visits the cemetery during the week of the Spring Equinox.
Hanami is popular this time of year, but you need the right kinds of trees and decent weather.

You’ve already missed Setsubun (“The Bean Throwing Festival” – Feb. 3) and National Foundation Day (Feb. 11), but you could probably observe them anyway. Depends on your clubmates, probably.

Isn’t Obon Festival coming soon?

@davidbetterman Easiest date to lock down for that (it’s based on the lunar calendar, see) is in August.
Which corresponds nicely with the timeline in The Karate Kid II!
