Where should I start with Mozart?

Asked by fathippo (746points) March 3rd, 2010

I am normally more of a metallist… however I am told he is very good, and also I guess there is a lot to be learnt from classical music. I just don’t really know where to go first: I like things in minor keys best as a rule, and am interested in stuff with ze piano (for educational purposes), because it’s what I play, but I love all the ol’ strings as well…
Thankyou =)

Try the last two symphonies, a fairly good summation of his art. Haydns later works are a good introduction to Mozart, as their thought was very similar.

Based on what you said abou minor keys, try the Mozart Requiem in D Minor.

Maybe you’d enjoy the movie Amadeus just to get a feel for his work (and his history), and see what grabs you.

If you like your classical music packaged with a story, an opera such as the comic favorite The Marriage of Figaro might be a great choice. If you like piano and romance, listen to Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21, which was used in the film Elvira Madigan (so some people call it “the theme from Elvira Madigan”) and which can be heard here on YouTube.

Here are two of my favorite arias from Figaro: ‘Voi che sapete’ and ‘Dove sono. You might also enjoy Non piu andrai.

@sjmc1989 @stranger_in_a_strange_land I shan’t disappoint!

The best thing to look at that incorporates all of what you are interested in are his piano concertos.

Mozart’s most famous concerto (arguably) is Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K 466. (Sorry, it takes a while for the piano to come in). However, #20 is the only one in a minor key! Check out Piano Concerto No. 21, No. 19, No. 9, and No. 8. I’m sure they’re all good, but those are the ones I am most familiar with.

If you like that, I would also suggest looking into his piano sonatas. I’m sure you’ve heard it before, but the third movement of Piano Sonata No. 11 in A major is really good and it’s in a minor key. I also recommend Piano Sonata No. 15.

Mozart’s symphonies are also worth looking into. In particular, I recommend Symphony No. 25 in G minor, Symphony No. 40 in G minor, Symphony No. 41 in C major Jupiter, and my personal favorite Symphony No. 30 in D major. There are 41 in total.

As the others said, his operas are worth looking into as is the Requiem in D minor.

That’s a start, at least. Hope you end liking his music because it’s quite amazing. :)
