Is this hipster-ironic-good or just plain terrible (a SXSW rock n roll band)?

I caught this performance of Mumiy Troll, a Russian rock band, on Craig Ferguson a couple of nights back. They’re performing at SXSW this year. My gut reaction is that they are horrible in an Eastern-Bloc-trying-to-be-western kind of way, but because they made it on a show I like (plus it’s just odd), I feel strangely compelled to find reasons to like them. What do you think?

MWAAHAHA!!!! Very gimmicky, could be fun if you’re very drunk.
Why do you feel compelled to find a reason to like a band that obviously sucks? Just because they’re on TV or at a big festival, it doesn’t mean they’re good.
@LunaChick, I don’t know. I guess I’m baffled that they made it on the show. Maybe because it’s cringeworthy and not in a particularly funny way, so like the great evil tragedies of history, I’m grasping for an explanation.
I thought it was going to be good. It was really bad. Especially the singer. He’s grating.
They remind me of Murderdolls.
Definitely hipster-ironic-good. There’s a current obsession with all things Eastern Euro – klezmer infused, accordion rock, etc.
@kfingerman, if you could link to other examples, I’d be most appreciative.
It’s horrible. I felt like I just walked in to a bar on a Monday night to watch some old friends reunion with his terrible high school band.
@judochop, I know exactly what you mean. I was once in one of those bands.
Terrible bands are some of the most fun to watch.
I don’t know what it is about the eastern block bands but even when they’re completely awful, they’re absolutely 1000% into what they’re doing and it’s always a refreshing change from the pop we’re being spoonfed here in the states. I applaud the effort.
If their message is anti-hipster, then bonus points awarded!
The drummer is a sexy mother shut your mounth. Nice shirt.
Bad. Bad. Very bad.
Oh yeah, they’re terribad. They were awful in Russia and they’re awful in the United States. Although, they don’t sound nearly as bad on albums as they do live.
Echhh! They sound like a lot of bands you hear on PRI’s The World. I happen to like that show but I don’t feel compelled to like most of the music played on there.
My verdict is: meh. This isn’t even ironic-bad-good. It’s just meh:
…music itself not bad. Lyrics and singing terrible.
…lead singer’s looking nervous and overdoing it.
…ripping off Flaming Lips with the bear antics.
…album version’s probably better, or at least tighter. This was sloppy.
They’ll get a gig at the big Williamsburg riverside music series this summer (at least an opening slot for a bigger band) because the girl’s a good-looking blonde and the guy will act stupid, thus giving something for the crowd to talk about.
