What does it mean when you are booting up if a blue screen comes on stating: Hardware Malfunction?

Asked by davidbetterman (7560points) March 6th, 2010

It further stated, “Call your hardware vendor for support…NMI Parity Check…Memory Parity Error…
“The system Has Halted..

And then when I rebooted the computer needed to do a File system check on FAT32…

This is on a laptop running Windows XP

And now all is well!

The blue screen of death usually means it’s crashed! You’re lucky.

Well since it said hardware malfunction, then I guess it means that there was a hardware malfunction. And since it said you need to do a file system check on FAT32 that makes me think that it was a problem with the hard drive. FAT32 is a hard drive format. Perhaps it fixed itself. Maybe it was just a corrupted file that was solved if you updated.

Though its probably a good idea to grab your windows xp installation disk. Then boot from it and instead of choosing install windows xp, choose repair. It should offer the choice to look for problems with the OS thats currently stored on your hard drive and fix any corrupted files that may be there.

Your hard drive might also be faulty or just over the mill. I really don’t know. Sorry about that

I don’t know. One of the many things I do when I get scared about something like that is run a disk check.

Captain obvious thinks you have a hardware problem.

Thanks guys. It hasn’t been a problem since I rebooted and it did an automatic scan of the FAT32 file.
