Should I buy citrus locally or online?
I am planning to make limoncello, a lemon-flavored liquor for home use and as a gift. Should I select the fruit myself at a local grocery store or buy directly from groves? Would the quality of the final product outweigh the cost of the lemons plus shipping/handling?

Why have it shipped if you can get it locally?
Not knowing where you live makes this difficult to answer.
I live in Florida. If I want an orange, I can easily pop over to my friend’s backyard and pick as many as I please. There are local farmer’s markets everywhere that can supply all the fresh, locally grown produce I can handle for a really good price.
If you aren’t so lucky, I would consider where your grocery goes to supply their shelves.
If their oranges are coming from Chile, the environmental impact of ordering from a farm in California would be considerably less, and the fruit you receive will be much fresher.
Good point. I live in New England. This time of year much of the produce is coming from South America.
Unless you have a local outlet that sells produce in large quantities direct from wholesalers, I would go online. I’ve had great results in the past with Indian River Farms for Florida grapefruit and oranges. I don’t know if they sell lemons as well.
Now that I am living in Boston, we get our produce almost exclusively from the Haymarket—a weekend street market where vendors sell produce (and in the winter, fish) direct from the wholesale distribution warehouses. We’ve picked up 25 pound boxes of oranges at the Haymarket for $3 and less, but outside Boston there aren’t many cities where such a thing is possible
I never purchase anything thats sight unseen and this includes fruits and veggies. would you buy a car off the internet? not me. the vehicle may have too many internal problems that can be hidden in an internet description. best bet is your local grocery store for fruits and veggies.
I brew beer and meade and the quality of the ingredients is every thing especially with meade. I always mail order my honey in order to get the exact honey I need to get the flavor I want.
From what I can tell the limoncello is made from Sorento lemons and if you want the real deal you may have to order them.
I always try to buy local produce. It just isn’t always available.
