Can working too hard make you sick?

Asked by Val123 (12739points) March 7th, 2010

I spent about 5 hours yesterday, and 5 hours today raking and cleaning our big back yard. Working the perimeter meant spending time on my hands and knees getting to leaves my rake couldn’t get. I also was filling a trash can with the leaves and hauling it over the the place I’ve set aside for composting. I’ve probably hauled 30 cans full.
I was also hauling bricks and just…stuff.
I quit for the day about an hour ago. My back is killing me, but I expected that. However, a minute ago I realized I was really hungry, so I got some left over chicken fried rice that my husband made last night. I ate about half of it….and now I just feel sick.
Please tell me it’s normal and temporary, because I start my new job tomorrow…...

It is probably a reaction to all the heard work that you felt sick to your stomach. Give it a little time. Rest up.

You should be fine tomorrow.

bstar3's avatar

Maybe you don’t work that hard offend? Yeah, just take a rest. you should be fine.

filmfann's avatar

It’s normal and temporary. Chill out.

Captain_Fantasy's avatar

You have to work a lot more than you did to make yourself sick.

davidbetterman's avatar

Hahaha It’s probably just the left over chicken fried rice that your husband made last night.

@ragingloli
I guess you can count on the Japanese being loopy dedicated enough to toil themselves to kingdom come, but I don’t suppose it’s something to worry about in this situation.
For starters it seems mostly a desk job risk. (Because of course you have to take into account that the various different kinds of activities we lump together into the category “work” all have different effects on the body.)

Val123's avatar

@bstar3 Well, I used to work that hard all the time. But to be honest I haven’t done much of anything for about three years.

janbb's avatar

@Val123 You’ll be fine by tomorrow. A hot bath and night’s sleep will cure all!

galileogirl's avatar

The aches and pains come from not working hard enough before. If you worked a little harder and made your own meal, you probably wouldn’t have had tummy issues.

YARNLADY's avatar

Doing work you are not physically fit enough for, not eating properly, and overall abusing your body is what made you sick. I doubt you drank enough water, so you were probably de-hydrated. You didn’t take the necessary rest periods, and then ate possibly spoiled food.

If you’re out of shape or even in shape exertion can make you a little nauseous. It’s perfectly normal.

galileogirl's avatar

However (back to thr main question) working too hard, that is too many hours. can make you sick and even bring about premature death. Not getting enough rest and quick pick-up meals can stress the body’s systems and cause them to break down.

mattbrowne's avatar

Absolutely. There are lots of blue- and white-collar examples.

Val123's avatar

@galileogirl My goodness, you do make assumptions. If you’d read the thread you would have found that I’ve physically worked very hard all my life, with the exception of the last three years, since we sold the mower shop. So, to a certain extent, yes, I was out of shape for me, but still in better shape than most. Further, my husband likes to cook, I don’t. Do you have an issue with that?

@SeventhSense Thanks….yes, I’m fine today. Wonderfully tired and achey! Like I played six games of volleyball (Like I used to do three times a week! :) It feels good. I start my first day of work today, but on Mondays I work from 11:30 to 8:00, so I got a little extra sleep, which was a good thing.

I’ve learned to pace myself a little more in the gym. It’s hard because I want to work like I can do anything -my head says I’m 20 but my body reminds me I’m 42. It doesn’t have to be a huge adjustment but I have to consider the intensity.

Val123's avatar

@SeventhSense Yeah…after a three year hiatus I guess I should have considered that. It’s just that I’ve worked like that all of my life, (albeit with no “hiatus” until the last 3 years), and never felt ill afterward! AND, I even did all the cooking, until I met my now-husband.

galileogirl's avatar

@Val123 What assumptions? A few hours physical exertion=muscle pain=lack of recent exertion=“I’ve physically worked very hard all my life, with the exception of the last three years,” Don’t be so quick to find umbrage. Not knowing your husband, how could I have an issue with him? Maybe you are projecting your issues with his comestables-not an assumption, just a suggestion.

Val123's avatar

@galileogirl Well, as I said, I’ve worked hard all of my life and it never made me feel nauseous. so I was curious as to what was up.
As to the second, would you clarify exactly what your reasoning was behind suggesting that “if I made my own food I wouldn’t have tummy issues.” Exactly what does that have to do with anything?

galileogirl's avatar

@Val123 (sigh) Nobody has said physical exertion had anything to do with your nausea. However it seems obvious that freshly cooked food has less chance of contamination than leftovers. Really, my dear, it would serve you well to carefully read posts before you jump to Olympic size wrong conclusions,

Val123's avatar

@galileogirl Nice try, but not gonna spin. If you had said, “If you had cooked fresh food…” that would have been at least an allusion to contaminated food. Better yet, you should have said, “You should have eaten fresh food, ” with no allusion as to who cooked it, because that’s totally pointless. Your response, however, was, “If you had cooked your own food ” which leaves the obvious intention of suggesting either I’m lazy, or I made or expected my husband do it, when everybody knows that’s a woman’s job.

You said, Nobody has said physical exertion had anything to do with your nausea. Then you said, Really, my dear, it would serve you well to carefully read posts. Well, really, my dear. Read the post. Several people did say that exertion like that when you’re not used to it can make one nauseous. It had never happened to me before though, so I was curious as to if that could have been the cause. Obviously, it was, as no one else got sick from the food, and I ate some the next day will no ill effects.

ragingloli's avatar

it is obvious that she has tummy aches because she cooks her own food lol

Val123's avatar

@ragingloli Huh? Hey! Who cooks the food where you’re at now? :)

Val123's avatar

Of course you do. You’re a girl.

ragingloli's avatar

precisely.

YARNLADY's avatar

@Val123 How are you feeling today? How is the new job going? I have also found that not working enough can make me sick. Often when I get up from several hours at the computer, I feel dizzy and nauseous, and I realize I forgot to eat.

Val123's avatar

@YARNLADY Oh, I’m fine! I was just jacked up for the rest of the evening, but was fine the next morning. New job is splendid! Better than I had even hoped for!
(I hate it when I know I have to eat, because I have to force myself too, most of them. Food just doesn’t hold that much interest for me.)

YARNLADY's avatar

@Val123 I’m glad to hear that about the job. I don’t have much of an appetite either. I discovered I can just eat a container of yogurt with fruit and solve both issues at the same time.

Val123's avatar

@YARNLADY Me too. My husband does NOT get it! He has to have meat and potatoes (preferably fried) every night. I could make do with macaroni w/tomato sauce and stewed tomatoes. I could live on that stuff! Night after night!

SeventhSense's avatar

@Val123
“macaroni w/tomato sauce and stewed tomatoes”?
Well you may have divulged another cause of your nausea. Lots of acidic foods.

Val123's avatar

@SeventhSense Unfortunately, I haven’t had it in ever and ever so long! With Cheddar cheese melted in it? Mmmmmm!! (And how would it be worse than spaghetti sauce? Just wondering….) But….nope, just the chicken fried rice that was made the night before.

@SeventhSense I bookmarked that for Saturday reading…interesting. Very interesting. Thank you.
My diet has changed drastically with the advent of my husband. My diet used to comprise mainly of said macaroni and tomatoes, and bean burritos with cheese, lettuce, and….salsa and tomatoes. But also, crab salad (using coleslaw salad) with cole slaw dressing, baked potatoes with cheese and…things like that. I felt much better then than I do now.
