What's the easiest way for someone flying from New Zealand to San Francisco to buy top-up cards for Virgin Mobile pre-pay cell phones?

A good friend of mine is visiting from New Zealand and is wondering how hard or easy it might be to top up a Virgin Mobile pre-pay cell phones once she gets here. Any advice? Is there an alternative pre-paid cell phone service that might be better than Virgin Mobile?
