The ones I see here in the city are begging for change and drinking. Some are probably drug users. One homeless guy here had an affinity for riding public transit and stabbing people randomly including a 13 year old boy and a college girl who was sleeping.

On Market St there was a passerby minding his own business who was struck on the back of the head with a blunt object. by a homeless man The victim died the next day.

Most homeless here are not violent but some have obvious mental problems. You can see that in homeless woman I saw last month who soiled herself and was walking around screaming conversation with no one.

wander, some collect bottles and cans, some find food other ways. hang out with homeless friends. do things to get social services, which takes all day. it’s alot of work to be homeless

Go underground where they have build an elaborate vintage 1800th century palace in the sewers. And strangely enough they have plumbing.

I was reading Nickel and Dimed a few years back. Some of them work full time jobs. That book was a real eye opener. There was a woman who had to live in her car while she worked at a diner, trying to get enough for a first/last/deposit on an apartment.

I knew homeless people in San Francisco who spent all day in cafes and would make stuff to sell, knitting or making chain mail, stuff like that. Knew some street musicians and panhandlers as well.

In addition to the above suggestions I would like to point out a growing trend.
The recent bad years of the economy many have lost their homes to foreclosure. They have had to take lower wages and live in a car or the streets but get up every day and go to work. It is not by choice and is seen as a temporary measure till things improve.

Many homeless collect cans and recyclables. They frequent sporting events and ask for the empties.

I was homeless for a few weeks when I was 19. I was working and young enough that I could still call people up to crash on couches, do laundry, and things like that. The nights that I spent outside, I didn’t sleep but spent the time moving around, passing the time in places that were open 24 hours. During the day, I picked up extra shifts at work, slept on the train, visited friends, went to the library, or went to internet cafes. It kind of sucked, but things were easier for me in a lot of ways than they would be for lifelong homeless people.

I have a house and I am homeless.
At least for the next 25 years. When the bank does not own it any more and hopefully I do..

In NJ, some homeless people and families actually have work and go to school. Through Social Services, they are placed in temporary housing (mostly out of the way cheap motels) until they can get into Section 8 housing.

Locally, the homeless we are publicly aware of, wake from their makeshift tarp tents, and head to the local soup kitchen for coffee. They have access to food and drink, telephones and computers, and are able to make contact with SS,unemployment etc. A few roam around town looking for scrap metal and aluminum cans to cash in. The soup kitchen offers help where they can and serves a hot lunch. The sandwiches to go is a popular attraction. Some head back to their tents by late afternoon and others head to the pub. A few find alcohol helps with the colder weather and I’m certain some have drinking problems. Many make use of whatever they locate in grocery store dumpsters. They pass the evenings with campfires and radios if they have batteries. Blankets are appreciated and protected as are sleeping bags and whatever they gathered during their day. My community is 40,000 and we don’t have a lot of homeless that we’re aware of. As of this writing I believe the ones living in tents have now been gotten out of the cold and are in a dwelling.

Hello! That is like asking what you and I do every day. The homeless people are not drones or clones – there is no single answer to your question.

Read Stuart: A Life Backwards if you want to know what ONE homeless person’s life was like.
