What exactly are the Kiwanis, Rotary, and Lion's clubs?

Asked by Ltryptophan (12091points) March 11th, 2010

I know they are civic involvement organizations and that sort of thing, but is there a social element? What is going on behind the scenes? Why is it such a to-do internationally. I can’t tell if these things are lame, or the cat’s meow!

Kiwanis started as a businessmen s club for the purpose of helping the members grow their businesses. They switched to a service club, charitable organization a few years after their formation, and are respected all over the world for their work today.

Rotary club is very similar, with a similar background. Both clubs were started by businessmen who wanted to share tips and ideas for growth. Rotary clubs turned to charitable works in the early 1940’s to assist with the War efforts, and expanded from there.

Lion’s Club was founded as a charitable organization right from the start, when a group of businessman got together to pool their resources in helping their community.

All three of these organizations are reputable groups within the U.S. for their charity works. Internationally, there is some issues due to the current economic crisis.

I don’t even know and I received an award from the Rotary Club. :P

They’re all what are considered “service clubs”. Mostly I just see their logos on the welcome signs for various towns and cities.

They are little havens for community business boosters, and they spread the theology of capitalism in between fooling around and getting hammered.

It’s where all the Boy Scouts go when they grow up. Collecting pins, badges and awards is an almost impossible addiction to break.

They are organizations where masters of their universe get together to network and pat one another on the back.
