What is The Most You Have Ever Spent on a Luxury Item?

Asked by delam (358points) March 12th, 2010

Living in an area where people spend an enormous amount of money on luxury items I am just curious about other peoples personal limits in this regard. Thank you. :-)

Hm. I once spent $1700 on a laptop computer, but I used it for photoediting work for my husband’s band. I think that’s the most money I’ve ever spent in one place. By a long shot.

Hmmmm…aside from my car and computer ( I don’t really consider them ‘luxuries’ although they are I suppose.)

The most I ever spent on what I would really call a luxury item ( aside from a couple of vacations ) was an amazing original acrylic painting a few years ago. It is HUGE, about a 5×5 canvas…amazingly beautiful modern abstract oceanic theme. I have never regretted it and appriciate it every day.

I could care less about diamonds and other such nonsense, but I love art & travel! :-)

$800 for a fancy rifle.

$589 for my guitar. Same guitar goes for $900+ now.

$15000.00 on a car when I already had full use of my partners car. It was so pretty and shiny and the car salesman put stripes on it!

$14,000.00 on a diamond.

@delam, what area is it that you live in?

I spent $3000 on an art work once. But that’s the only time I’ve ever done anything of the sort. Luxury items for me are apt to be small and frivolous, under $100 and infrequent.

$500 for an Italian suit.

$600/day for Botwana safari camp for 2; 4 days. Worth every single penny.

I bought a 400k house just because I could. I didn’t need one that expensive. Even with appreciation, it was a stupid purchase.

@phillis If that’s stupid, I don’t know what words we’d have to use to describe what others did.

Bob, I will never hurt for company, will I :)

@phillis Stupidity is never in short supply :)

My laptop was around $2600, but I didn’t buy it per se. I didn’t buy my car either, but it is an Audi, so it cost a pretty penny.

Rich kid in the hizz-ouse. :)

Probably a few items. But what springs to mind is the day I bought a red snakeskin bag and briefcase that cost me about $800. The brief case was subsequently stolen. I also bought a versace top that cost me $600 on a sale and I never wore the thing. Eventually I gave it to my mad neighbour.

I bought a prada ski jacket, later sold it for about a tenth of what I paid. I have a really good espresso maker that I’m glad I have. A rolex watch that is really sturdy.

My luxury biggest purchase would definitely be my camera and accessories. With the camera, lenses (several are big telephoto ones), filters, software programs, and a (surprisingly expensive) tripod, the price comes to well above $3,500. However, I have gotten years of use and pleasure out of it, and I think it was a very worthwhile purchase.

I bought a pretty expensive Dell laptop last year, that’s all shiny black and has leather on it, lol. I think I paid around $2,000 for it.

More expensive than that, there was the $5,000 for an engagement ring for my (now) ex-wife. Interestingly, she just bought a $40k car a few weeks ago, with all the great stuff (leather, GPS, game ports for the kids, towing package, power everything). I “wonder” where she got the money for that?

I bought a $650 dollar tanzanite ring in Mexico- rarely wear it- must get it sized. This was 8 years ago.

I paid over $300 for a bong about 5 years back.

I almost bought a $80 beef roast. It was perfect. I had the money but decided not to buy. I did have $15 a month for HBO. A well as most of the channels available to a Canadian.
