Is there a way to have eidetic memory by practicing?

Asked by frigate1985 (927points) March 14th, 2010 from iPhone

Id very much like tohave an eidetic memory because it would be such a big help in everyday life. But I heard that they were almost 100% genetucally given and that people who have a nearly eidetic memory is but a great memorizer…however is there even the slightest possibility og getting an eidetix memory by practice??

I believe that it is purely genetic. But there are some methods like the method of loci and peg systems that you can use to improve your memory which are helpful.

@frigate1985 Look up the method of loci. I’ve used this and it’s quite a powerful technique when used correctly. However mostly applicable to lists of items, with practice and familiarity I think you can expand it. It relies on the concept that creating more assocations with items increases the memory trace. Also distinctiveness is another key concept utilised as distinct items are more likely to be recalled as shown by countless experiments.

It may take a lot of practice at first, but that’s what you expected right when wanting an eidetic memory? This is probably the closest you’ll get to it at the moment.

The only problem with this is that you have to consciously focus on creating the locus, whereas eidetic memory happens without consciousness.

@Ame_Evil yeah that would work thanks :)

There’s evidence to support memorization of poetry as a means of expanding your memory capacity and improving retention of study materials.
