Is it rude to sleep at the dinner table when out to dinner with a group of friends?

Asked by erikaziger (345points) March 14th, 2010

I smoked some pot last night then went out to a midscale restaurant with my husband and some friends. I fell asleep at the table for about 5–10 min. Friends say this was rude, but I have always been of the notion that “dinner should be a relaxing time”. This was said to me by a french waiter at a restaurant that served the best dinner I have ever eaten. Anyways, my friends knew I was high and I really was enjoying myself. I just needed a nap. was I wrong?

Are you serious?

No, it’s quite usual.~

I think it’s kind of rude, and I’m not too judgmental about manners. Whatever your intent, the implication is that you were bored by your friends.

Narcolepsy is a bitch, ain’t it?
Too bad that wasn’t your problem.
Yes, it’s rude.

Personally I don’t think so. But then I’m not much for manners and etiquette. If I invite you over to dinner, smoke all the weed you want, drink all the booze I have and pass out if you will, as long as you enjoy yourself.

It’s kinda rude, then again…

I don’t think it’s rude at a mid-scale restaurant and based on your question I assume you’re talking McDonald’s.

No. They must understand your situation/condition.

You’re lucky your hand didn’t end up in hot water.

This is just plain funny.I used to fall asleep on dates with “Rich” almost every time we went out.I wasn’t trying to be rude,it just overcame me like the Black Plague.I think he laid me off.Permanently.LOL

You should have excused yourself and napped in the car.

SeventhSense's avatar

Yes by all means. Shitting on the floor and wiping yourself with the tablecloth is considered a compliment to the chef as well.

Totally rude. Totally embarrassing for the person you are with.

“I need to get high to get through spending an evening with you” is a lovely sentiment.

We all know that “dinner should be a relaxing time” doesn’t mean you can sleep at the table. You must be in denial if you are trying to use that as an excuse to justify sleeping at the dinner table.

If you had to go to dinner with one friend or another, would you choose the one who was awake the whole time, or the one who just slept at the table? (that is a rhetorical question)

I would say yes, it is rude. People go “out” to dinner with others for the company, not to watch people sleep!

Exactly if you’re so tired then you don’t go out. Or maybe smoke that doob after you’re home with your SO.

You knew the answer to your own question, before you even asked it. you mentioned the word rude and you got it. its rude. where was your husband in all of this? did he not even care?

Irishmar's avatar

I don’t know how rude it was, but I’m sure others thought you were drunk and passed out. Might have been a wee bit embarassing to your friends. I don’t know…...weird

Neizvestnaya's avatar

Yes it’s rude to your friends, the other diners and the establishment as well as reflecting poorly on you. Most people will make the assumption you’re a drunk or pill popping loon, sorry but I’d be embarassed to have been in your company.

deni's avatar

LOL. I wouldn’t be offended if it was a large group of people and one person was sleeping. I would be embarrassed for them, a lot though.

Supacase's avatar

It is fine as long as you don’t put your elbows on the table.

I probably would have walked out and left you.

thriftymaid's avatar

Yes, elbows and head off the table.
