What was the strangest ice cream flavor you've ever had?

Asked by lilikoi (10110points) March 14th, 2010

We’ve made all the regulars, and would like to try something new and unusual. Maybe bacon. Maybe durian.

What have you tried that is unusual, how did the idea of it originate, and what made it memorable?

Garlic. It is a traditional favorite at the annual garlic fest in Gilroy, CA.

lilikoi's avatar

Were they good or bad?

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

Dirt.Yeah,I dropped it! ;)

dpworkin's avatar

Garlic ice cream is OK. I wouldn’t go out of my way for it. I think I might like to try spinach fudge ripple.

Tea Grass in the Tokyo airport. It literally tasted like grass.

nikipedia's avatar

Salt and pepper, from Humphry Slocombe. I hated it.

You guys are killing me, talking sacrilege like this. Ice cream is sacred I tell you. It is to be savored like a lover. Not sullied with your talk of spinach and garlic and and and…shrimp! It literally pains me to think of it. I may have to go to DQ and get a reese’s peanut cup blizzard to recover from this, this OUTRAGE!
I am having so much fun here tonight!

@dpworkin….I, too, have had garlic ice cream both in Gilroy and at the Los Angeles food fair. It was refreshing and not a bit overbearing and certainly worth a taste, but I wouldn’t ever order it anywhere.

Hey Gary, should I try broccoli almond crunch?

whatthefluther's avatar

@dpworkin…..I hear cauliflower cashew kicks ass.

aprilsimnel's avatar

I have had red (Azuki) bean. I’m not sure what that is, except it was on the menu of the (very well regarded) Japanese restaurant across the road form me. It was OK.

jaytkay's avatar

Bean.

A Korean friend gave it to me. Surprisingly….OK.

faye's avatar

I agree with @Trillian. What you are saying here is sacrilege!

davidbetterman's avatar

Chunky Monkey. It was very good.

hudsong's avatar

Green Tea, home made, and it was divine.

dpworkin's avatar

Adzuki beans make wonderful candy. If you can ever find a high-end Japanese confectionery in the Summer time, ask for Yokan.

St.George's avatar

Avocado. It’s weird and perfect, don’t you think?

VohuManah's avatar

Green Tea mochi ice cream. Mochi ice cream is normal ice cream covered with sticky rice to form a soft shell. They are small sacks of awesome.

I tried green tea ice cream, it was strangely good. The garlic ice cream sounds strange but i might have to go out of my way to try some.

@hudsong: There’s a Japanese restaurant in my town that has green tea ice cream. It is absolutely the most delicious dessert I’ve ever tried. It tastes almost like clay or something. So good.

@dpworkin & @whatthefluther: I’ve had garlic ice cream as well, at a garlic festival, along with a bunch of other garlic products. A few hours later I discovered that I’m allergic to garlic when I started puking my guts out. The taste of the ice cream was not bad though.

I had prickly pear cactus-flavored ice cream in some tiny Arizona town a few years ago and I honestly think it was the most delicious ice cream I’ve ever had. I tried green tea-flavored ice cream a couple weeks ago—didn’t like it very much.

whatthefluther's avatar

@Megan64 & @Frankie….Both avocado and prickly pear cactus sound intriguing…..I’d love to try both!
See ya….Gary/wtf

Grean tea. Gross

St.George's avatar

@whatthefluther Try Mitchell’s in SF. That’s where I had it, though it was several years ago.

SeventhSense's avatar

Thanks. Now you’re forcing me to go to Baskin Robbins against my will.

I had twizler ice cream before. That was pretty bizarre. It was the same color as red playdough lol. Strangest ice cream though, would have to go to wasabi ice cream.

Green tea ice cream is awesome

Though not ice cream, I made pineapple jalapeno sorbet before. AWESOME.

lilikoi's avatar

@uberbatman Was the wasabi ice cream any good? I heart green tea ice cream too. Oh. Oh. pineapple jalapeno sorbet sounds seriously awesome.

I think the avocado could really make the texture of ice cream creamy…I’ll be on the look out for Garlic and S&P! I think prickly pear would be delish. Might have to make that one, too, but the spines make it so hard to harvest/work with…

Frankie's avatar

I think I would grow to like green tea ice cream if I ate it regularly…it seems like an acquired taste, plus its more refreshing and light rather than sweet and dessert-ish, but it still has the thick creaminess of regular ice cream, so that would take some getting used to.

SeventhSense's avatar

Just got back from B n R: Rocky road, Vanilla,Mint Chocolate Chip, hot fudge, marshmallows, chocolate crunchies, nuts and whipped cream bitches. Oh ya.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@lilikoi at first I loved the wasabi ice cream, but ya really cant eat too much of it. After the first scoop it was starting to hurt my stomach. Didn’t necessarily taste bad, just hurt my stomach.

I totally forgot about the maple ginger ice cream i got in my freezer. Thats a weird one too. It tastes good, but you can only really eat a couple spoonfuls at a time.

im surprised how many people are mentioning prickly pear. I only ate a couple, but i really didnt think the fruit was anything special.

SeventhSense's avatar

Maybe it wasn’t green tea now that I think of it. It was some Korean green concoction.

Likeradar's avatar

@VohuManah Oh, mochi. So good. I like red bean and green tea.
I had port wine and cherry flavor ice cream, and it was amazing.

Berserker's avatar

Cola flavoured. It was pretty nasty.

PandoraBoxx's avatar

You’re making me crave pistachio gelatto.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@Likeradar i love mochi but ive never had the guts to try red bean. I think its cause I dont like beans in general, but thats a texture thing for me. How is it?

susanc's avatar

I had durian ice cream somewhere just to be brave. Maybe in the Chinese grocery store on Mud Bay Road in Olywa? It wasn’t horrid, but it wasn’t good either, plus I was afraid of it.

Molly Moo in Seattle makes killer ice cream flavors. My favorite so far was salted caramel. The woman behind me in line got it too and then complained that it had salt in it.
Duh.

ucme's avatar

Not so much flavour more crazy content. When I was a kid our local Ice cream van Tonibell, served what became known as the “Tonibell special“This confectionary delight consisted of an ice cream cone with chocolate flakes,an ice lolly stuck in the ice cream & the stick of the lolly was candy.Yummy, basically a cavity waiting to happen.

Likeradar's avatar

@uberbatman Super super yummy. The texture is a little gritty, but in that good icy ice cream way. I’m not a fan of beans either, but the red bean ice cream is just plain fabulous, at least where I get it.

figbash's avatar

We have some great, experimental ice cream places in Seattle. So far the more interesting ones I’ve had are:

* Old Bay
* Maple bacon
* Balsamic strawberry
* Beet

El_Cadejo's avatar

@Likeradar interesting, ill have to give it a shot next time im in an asian food mart.

@figbash i NEED maple bacon NAO. Ive had balsamic strawberry before, it was great.

Likeradar's avatar

@figbash Maple bacon?!?! OOOOOHHHH. I had a maple bacon cupcake, I can only imagine the joy maple bacon ice cream would bring me.

figbash's avatar

@Likeradar and @uberbatman: do not underestimate the fabulousness of maple bacon ice cream ; ) It makes a great item to bring to a party/potluck/movie night, too!

Likeradar's avatar

@figbash Is there a company that makes it?

lilikoi's avatar

@figbash What are the names of these places? I will be in Seattle soon, and must find these!!

figbash's avatar

Oh! I just saw these questions to me. I’ve been off of Fluther for a long, long time and sorry it’s taken me so long to respond.

Molly Moon’s and Full Tilt are great places to hit while you’re here. I hope I’m not too late. Also, PM me if you want any other suggestions!
