Is there a way to block all IP addresses from a certain state from visiting a website?

I am curious to know if it is possible to block IP addresses from particular geographies (e.g. countries, states, cities, etc) from accessing a website. As an example, if I launched a site and, for whatever reason, didn’t want people from Japan, Iowa, or Miami to be able to access the site, could I block them from accessing the site?

Um, why? If you don’t mind my asking…
Kind of. It’s not exact, and it’s easily defeated with proxies. But in general IP addresses broadly correspond to physical addresses.
If you want to do it, look into “IP Geolocation”.
Works for a whole country too. See Red China.
Interesting. I wonder is there is a way to block your email from any emails coming from a whole continent. Like Africa. I would love to stop getting spam from Nigeria or UK.
@Pandora Your email likely arrives from a local source (gmail, yahoo, hotmail, comcast, att.net, etc) and you don’t see the IP address.
@Pandora instead of blacklisting senders, you can do the opposite and create a WhiteList, wherein only people listed can get their emails delivered, all others get tossed into the spam folder or deleted immediately of you so desire.
If you want to block the Chinese all you have to do is mention the Tiananmen Square massacre somewhere on your site and the whole country will be blocked from seeing it.
Black listing, white listing, sounds vaguely uncomfortable when discussing Africa for some reason.
njnyjobs THANKS!! :D
Now if I can figure out how to do that for yahoo. :(
