How easy is it to migrate legally to Canada from the U.S?

Asked by St.George (5865points) March 14th, 2010

I’m thinking about living and working, and perhaps pursuing a PhD in Western Canada. Has anyone done this? What should I know before considering the move?

Yes. you can enter Canada without a problem. coming back into the United States you will need a passport. new law.

How easy is it compared to what?

If you want to know how to do it, there are websites that describe exactly what is required. I think you need a certain amount of assets and/or a job, plus other things. Look it up. It’s easy to find.

Otherwise, it’s the same as choosing to move anywhere else. You need to move your stuff, get new living arrangements, make new friends, and fit into a new community. It’s not for everybody.

From the source itself.

You will find it very difficult to get a job.

@AstroChuck But what is actually required? I have to think that Canada doesn’t accept students easily. The requirements are very high for Canadian students at a lot of the schools. We weren’t hit as hard as you guys by this economy but were still hit.

@faye Read the requirements on the website @AstroChuck provided. Or go to individual college or university sites if you are applying to schools. They’ll list the requirements.

Thanks, @AstroChuck!

@davidbetterman Why, do you suppose?

Does anyone have any personal US to Canada migration experience to share?

faye's avatar

I went to @AstroChuck site. I didn’t see any requirements listed. I live here- Western Canada. Edit, sorry, i went straight to the form!

My friend went to college in Canada. He didn’t have a work permit. He said it was impossible for out of country people to get work there (Quebec).

@faye Here in California ‘tis a common fact that it’s easy to get work under the table, as well as some low-paying labor or service-related jobs. Is it the same there?

faye's avatar

@Megan64 I don’t know anyone who does and never have, come to think of it. But it must happen.

Honest to God I thought that that ^ was the link I provided (hence the “source itself” comment). Instead I see I accidentally put the immigration lawyer site up instead.
