I'm in a terrible dilemma and seek outside advice!

Asked by sccrowell (3508points) March 6th, 2008 from iPhone

A little over a week ago, l thought l was dropping my watch (Rolex) into my purse. A couple of days later I went to put it on. Much to my surprise it was not there. I checked all my purses as well as my pants pockets (thinking perhaps l was mistaken.)

To make a long story short, my boyfriend has a friend who had stolen $40.00 from him. Even after Gary confronted her, she denied doing it, she still does. Anyway, Gary, whom might add has Lou Ghirigs disease, had wireless cameras placed in all the rooms. Hence, how he caught her stealing his money. Gary decided to call a mutual friend to ask if she’d seen my watch. Her answer was to ask if it had diamonds around it. It does!

My dilemma is this. He gave Ellen his word that he wouldn’t involve her. Nor, would he tell Mary. Well, he confronted Mary, who again denied taking it and just stormed out of our house. I don’t know what I should do! Had he not given his word that he would not to tell Mary it was Ellen who told him. I would confront her myself. By the way, my watch cost over $10,000.00 dollars. It would cost over 13000.00 to replace. Do l go to the police, confront her, ask Ellen if I could? PLEASE HELP, I need some type of advice. I thank you in advance!!!

I say it is expensive/valuable enough to get a written statement from Mary via authorities and submit the recordings as priors.

The value is what would stir me to include the police. That, and thieves… well, they tick me off.

Sorry about the loss of your watch. But I have to ask – what does a $10,000 watch do that a $40 watch doesn’t?

Try finding a timepiece as well engineered as a Rolex for under $500 (modern anyway)

Some people drive ferrarris, some drive Ford pintos. They both drive.

I’m sorry you lost your watch but perhaps you’ll be more careful when throwing around something worth $10,000. Do you know how many people you could feed with $10k? Don’t answer, its rhetorical.

I just wanted to again say, thank you as well as let you all know appreciate the advice you gave. I find it so hard to believe that this so called friend would do this to me. She knows we
would give her the shirt off our backs. But, not my watch, I worked extremely hard for that.

Oh! Paulc, I would never throw it around or abuse it. When l said I’d dropped it in my purse, well that was true. But, what I didn’t write was that l was in bed and my handbag was on my nightstand. Right next to me.

Sorry about your watch, but I’m with those above who are curious what your $10/13K watch does that a $40.00 Cassio doesn’t do. BTW, it’s spelled lou Gehrig’s disease.

Call the police. There’s no point in trying to be nice to someone, however much you like her, who’d casually steal a $10,000 watch from you.

Hello everyone, For those of you who are or were curious as to what my watch ($10,000.00+ Rolex) does that a $40.00/Casio doesn’t do…

Well, for starters, my watch won’t lose it’s value! Were I to part it out, such as to sell my just the diamond bezel that held the crystal in place. I paid $5200.00 for it. I could have sold it for minimum $6000.00 easy. Because the new ones sre running $7100.00. Mind you, mine was 5 years old. Do you think you could get 40.00 for a 5 year old casio? Not a chance. Another plus was my watch was automatic. So no batteries to replace. Last but not least, these watches are or were meant to last a lifetime. This is a piece that I will pass down to one of my daughters

I apologize for not placing a period (.) after daughters. Also, as you have probably noticed, I’m trying my best to be positive. That I will get it back. If not then instead of “will” it will be “would.” Instead of “can” it will be “could.” and so forth…

Goodnight and God bless

I just stumbled into this thread now. Did you call the police? Did you ever get your watch back?

sccrowell's avatar

Yes! I did indeed get my watch back and without involving the police. For that I will be forever grateful! Thank you fellow flutherers so very much!!!!!

I’m so happy for you!

Just FYI, unless there was a witness there is nothing the police could do with your case. Since the value of the watch is considered “grand theft” (over $5000) a detective would receive the case, but without evidence there would not be much the police could do for you. Depending on where you live (hate to say this…) that would be considered a very low priority crime. (Homicide, serious assaults get more attention)

I saw this as a Property Lost report through the police department and an insurance claim. You are very lucky you got it back. Please make sure you have a special rider on your insurance (home owners/renters) to cover that piece.

And I love and appreciate Rolex watches… no mystery of the value to me!!! ;) (I don’t have one… but would someday like to own one.)
