Ever spend time trying to find the exact spot in your book where you last stopped reading?

Asked by ETpro (34605points) March 16th, 2010

Bookmarks are fine for showing you the page you were on, but which paragraph was the last one you read? If it’s been any time since you put down your book, it can take serious effort to scan the pages and find your spot. Since I am a bathroom reader, this got to be a real niggling problem for me—so much so that I decided to apply some inventiveness to it and solve it with an improved bookmark.

I couldn’t post the resulting invention here, because we can’t post images. But my Sodahead Blog will explain how to make your own free ETpro’s Better Bookmark.

Happy reading, all.

I usually back up a few paragraphs or even a page or two anyway.

Tie a shoestring or ribbon around the book spine and use it for a bookmark.

Bookmarks are pretty handy little devices! lolol
Anything will do, a peice of toilet paper, a ribbon, a folded page.

This is a very solvable ‘problem.’ hahahahaha

I draw an arrow on the bookmark pointing to the particular paragraph where I should resume reading.

@Coloma Bananas don’t work so well, though. Trust me, I’ve tried it.

Interestingly enough, I almost invariably go right to the exact line where i left off.

I just start at the top of the page. I tend to miss important parts of the book if I don’t.

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities I do the exact same thing, then point the arrow to what paragraph you left off on, either side of the page works great!

I use a post-it® note, and place it right below the last sentence I read. Cheap, fast, and doesn’t get lost.

@erichw1504 YoWelcome. I frequently give books as gifts and I include a ribbon tied around the binding, sometimes with a charm attached.

@erichw1504 What did you try putting them in?

It’s normally where the pages are stuck togeth…..ahem ah okaaaay, moving swiftly on.

I usually use a ripped piece of paper, with one blank side and something on the other side. When I leave the bookmark in there, I leave the non-blank side facing the page that I am to continue on.

I do, but I don’t mind reading the parts before the spot I finished reading the last time. I find that reading those parts helps refresh my memory.

@AnonymousGirl My issue is I mostly read while visiting the bathroom. Although a male, who could stand and be done quickly, I prefer to sit and linger, reading a paragraph or two at a time—al page or two when more solid matter is the call. It gives me a moment’s break from work (I work at home, so I get to set my own hours—all of them) and it settles the age-old battle of the sexes about the proper position of the toilet seat. But if I reread to find my place, my reading strategy would seldom get me past a single page. :-)

No, I only finishing reading at the end of a chapter.
