What are some good songs for and Indie mixtape?

So I’m dating this Indie chick and I want to dazzle her with obscure music in a mixtape. I also want music that fits our situation, which is very new, so nothing too soggy or romantic, just light, fun, “hey I like you.” type music. Nothing that has ever seen heavy rotation on mainstream radio please.

I think anything by Nickleback or Drake would fit that.
Really? Find out what kind of music she likes and give her some of that. Someone who likes tremulous, quiet, and slow is different than someone who likes 70s punk rock.
With that said, it’s difficult to lose by trading on nostalgia:
“Do Right Woman”—Aretha Franklin I take it back. Go with @lucillelucillelucille‘s suggestion instead.
“Sixty Minute Man”—any number of groups (if she’s of a certain generation, you can get extra points with the Rockapella cover)
Minus the Bear is a good choice. Check out “throwing shapes” for starters.
As a word of warning, @johnpowell‘s list is somewhat generic for its type, which means you’ll either win big or fail hard. Were I you, even if I felt she was the type of girl to be into that music, I would throw in some diversity. Not only do you hedge your bets, but it makes you look mysterious and interesting by deviating from the formula a bit.
Again, @lucillelucillelucille‘s suggestions are made of win in that respect. :)
Anything from Karate or Notwist.
I don’t know how “indie” or “not-so-well-known”, but I’ve been enjoying the hell out of:
The Shins
Fleet Foxes
Iron & Wine
Bon Iver
... and the particular song “Stealing Electricity” (sorry, I don’t know who does it), oh, and “Punk Rock Girl” by Dead Milkmen
Throw her for a loop. Put in The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll by Prefab Sprout.
This is kind of ridiculous. Needs more Owl City ~.
What about:
Architecture In Helsinki
Andrew Bird
Beck
Bombay Bicycle Club
Cursive
The Dead Weather
The Heavy
Office
Locksley
Monsters of Folk
Pavement
Those are all pretty easy bands to get into and listen.
“Hide Me”—The Golden Filter
“Everyday”—Vetiver
Also, anything by She & Him, a refreshingly light-hearted, indie pop band.
I don’t like Owl City. And I Asked for songs, not bands. :)
The Owl City remark was a joke. The little tilde (~) after things means it’s sarcasm here.
Fair enough, I can do songs.
Heart It Races – Architecture In Helsinki
Imitosis – Andrew Bird
Loser – Beck
Always Like This – Bombay Bicycle Club
From The Hips – Cursive
So Far From Your Weapon – The Dead Weather
How You Like Me Now? – The Heavy
Enter Me, Exit You – Office
Why Not Me – Locksley
The Right Place – Monsters of Folk
And anything by Pavement.
I agree about Pavement. I love stephen malkmus. I’m surprised no one has mentioned Iron and WIne
I know they’re both more mainstream now but I really dig a lot of the stuff by Rilo Kiley or Tegan & Sara.
