Is there a book you've read that you would love to be made into a movie?

I realize that most films inspired by a book, usually aren’t as good as the book itself, but assuming this film could do the book justice, what would you like to be seen up on the big screen?
Choose a book that has yet to be made into a film.
It can be fiction, non-fiction, an autobiography, etc.
I’d love to see The Painted Bird and A Child Called It.

The Genesis Code by John Case
The Last Coin by James P. Blaylock
Big screen versions of Pratchett’s Discworld series
Actually, I’d like to see The Elfin Ship and The Disappearing Dwarf by Blaylock made into a movie, too.
Elric of Melniboné by Michael Moorcock.
Little Fuzzy by H. Beam Piper.
And a real, good, adaptation of one of Robert Sheckley’s books.
hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy, but properly this time. 4 to 5 hours long, nothing left out.
Until We Have Faces
C.S. Lewis
Dandelion Wine
Ray Bradbury
At the Back of the North Wind
George MacDonald
I don’t have any of those anymore. I’ve seen enough beloved books turned into mediocre films that I prefer the original format in all situations.
Logan’s Run. The way it was written in the original book.
@Rarebear Already in the works. Well, a new one, anyway. I guess it won’t have Farrah in it, though.
Yes, Frankenstein.
“Wait a minute!” you’ll say, “That’s been made into a few movies by now!”
True enough, movies by that title have been made, but they’re nothing like Mary Shelley’s book—- you’ll see nothing of a sensitive creature who has feelings, who so wishes he were accepted by people he meets, who has the desire to find meaningful relationships with others, who is rejected by everyone around him, including his creator, the very one who should feel and act responsibly and care about the creation he took the effort to make.
War and Peace except with actors that actually make sense. Not Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepburn.
The Monkey Wrench Gang – Edward Abbey.
This question inspired me to do a little searching, and I found out that a film adaptation of the book may be in the works for 2013.
The da Vinci Code would be a great movie.
@mrentropy I know, but that IMDB entry has been in place for several years now, and they keep pushing the project back.
The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood and The Red Tent by Anita Diamant, but only if they were each about 5 hours long and didn’t cut or change anything…which would never happen.
I’d like to see the entire Patrick O’Brien series of sea stories (Captain Jack Aubrey, played by Russell Crowe in Master and Commander) made into more than one representative movie.
Also more Heinlein books: The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Time Enough for Love, and Stranger in a Strange Land.
@Rarebear I don’t think they’ve given up yet.
@Frankie I was gonna say, “Handmaid’s Tale” was done in 1990.
Oh, and Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke.
Anything by Terry Pratchett but, if I had to pick one, Small Gods by Terry Pratchett.
That would have the religious right protesting.
Great Question!
‘The Gone-Away World’ Nick Harkaway
Amazing Book !!!
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami.
Is someone going to send this thread to Hollywood?
The Power of the Dog by Don Winslow
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon
Time and Again by Jack Finney. A great time travel cult classic about New York City. It was picked up by Robert Redford but never made.
@Holden There was a great War and Peace version made by the Russians in the 1970s. My Mom and I saw it in NYC and cried the whole way through. Check for it.
With superhero movies being big, I’m surprised the Wild Aces series hasn’t made it to the silver screen.
@RareDenver no no no!! we should all keep it a secret…pick the best suggestion…invest money and creative energy into it and all become very rich…!!! GO JELLIES!!!!
Another Fine Myth by Robert Asprin.
seriously I think we should… we just need someone with a movie studio to get us going I reckon!! we have enough writers, artists, producers, actors etc… :) let’s DO IT!!!
And one of the Garrett P.I. books by by Glen Cook.
Although Soldier of the Mist by Gene Wolfe would be awesome.
@lucillelucillelucille is that a joke? Da Vinci Code was already done, and pretty faithful to the book, too, I thought.
The Thief of Always by Clive Barker. Apparently it is going to be made into a film this year, which is news to me. I remember reading it when I was barely a teenager and it was my favorite book.
The Once and Future King by T.H. White.
A lot of Heinlein’s work could be adapted to the big screen, if you had a production team that cared. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress would be glorious, as would Have Spacesuit, Will Travel (would need some extra content to bring it to feature length; a lot of it is Moon-slogging), Orphans of the Sky, Red Planet, The Door into Summer, and you could make an entire series out of the Lazarus Long saga.
Time for the Stars would make a good miniseries.
Starship Troopers does not count, tyvm.
I’d like to see Card and Asimov get movies, too. Though Asimov’s short-story format would be better suited to a miniseries.
@Nullo I would love to see The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress.
The First Law series by Joe Abercrombie. Characters as morally gray as morning fog, lots of action, roles that could easily be filled by modern actors, and the balance between exposition and action is well-enough paced that it could be a mainstream movie.
@Fenris I was just going to say that! I didn’t like third book as much, though.
I’d like them to re-do Eragon and not completely change the entire story-line to some half-assed piece of crap this time.
Naked Lunch.
Not hard at all.
Edit: And I mean a real one, not the pseudo-adaptation made in ‘91.
Nothing original springs to mind, but as i’ve said before i’d love to see an epic remake of The Lord of the Flies.Fingers & toes crossed.
Splinter of the Mind’s Eye by Alan Dean Foster :D
@Fenris I think I was yelling at the screen the entire time. It made me so mad.
Ever since I got the book Diary of a Wimpy Kid I wanted them to make a movie! And I’m so happy it’s going to be in theaters in like 5 days! Yay!
The Black Castle by Les Daniels (Not to be confused with an old movie of the same name.) would make an awesome classical vampire movie, if done right. The way the book is written, I think it would be easy to make an epic movie à la Elisabeth, only with vampires and more violence.
Also, The Book of Shadows by James Reece was a fantastic tale. It might be hard to make a movie from, but if anything, I’d love to see what Tim Burton would do with a gothic story that involves lesbian ghost sex.
“Faster than the speed of love” by Brian Griffin. I haven’t read it but…sound pretty bad. Great book = bad movie vice a versa (not always).
@Symbeline Lesbian ghost sex? I’ll fund the fucker myself!
@Vunessuh I know you’re not into books much, but if you ever do see it, you should read it. It’s really…I’ve read a lot of books and nothing comes close to how fucked up and awesome this is. Ecxept maybe Tanith Lee. >_>
@Symbeline I’ll take your word for it. I only like to read fucked up, disturbing stuff. I don’t have the attention span for anything else. I’ll check it out. :)
I shudder to think of what compromises would have to be made to transform Ken Follett’s, Pillars of the Earth and World Without End.
These historical novels tell a compelling story but the two books each have too much meat for a typical motion picture.
Einstein’s Dreams by Allan Lightman. Granted, it doesn’t have a traditional plot or characters, but his writing is very cinematic. When I read, the scenes play like a movie in my head.
Myst: The Book of Atrus, which in turn is derived from the best-selling computer game Myst.
@ragingloli: I thought they already did and that they called it Religulous.
I think the Wheel of Time series deserve a film series to match.
@ragingloli
Dawkins has done a few documentaries. Considering how much he repeats himself across media, I wouldn’t be surprised if there already were a film making most of the same points the book makes.
And now I’m wondering why the heck two people would see fit to upvote that comment.
Journey Outside, Star Dragon, The Dragonriders Of Pern.
The Day The Laughter Stopped, a book about the Fatty Arbuckle scandal.
Yes. It was announced years ago it would be made into a movie but never was. Beach Music by Pat Controy.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
Dear Hollywood,
NO MORE REMAKES PLEASE
The Anita Blake Series by Laurell K Hamilton.
maybe not the whole series because it’s graphic but some of it especially Blue Moon
@Fyrius : The Wheel of Time is a sacred compendium. I say it’s impossible, no matter the resources and result, to make anything that wouldn’t drag what it is through Hell. An effort twice that of Lord of the Rings would only scratch the surface of Jordan’s Opus Magnum.
@Draconess25 : I second Dragonriders.
@Fyrius
It got upvoted because you said “Dawkins.” There are many knee-jerk reactions to Dawkins, and I suppose that GAs are one.
@Nullo
Curiously, I had the impression I earned those upvotes by saying something bad about professor Dawkins. His being repetitive.
You’re right, of course. There are many knee-jerk reactions to mention of controversialists like Dawkins. Both from his supporters and from the people who hate his guts.
Any Karen Rose book would be good.
My Sister’s Keeper is a good one too and guess what?? That has already been made into a movie! ya!
@Fyrius
Look, your post, my response and your response to my response -all of them using Dawkins in a sentence – got Lurve. I do believe that we have discovered a new method for getting GAs!
Oh! Also..
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Icy Sparks, Pretty Little Dirty and It’s Kind of a Funny Story (though apparently they’re currently shooting the movie).
@chels Yup, it’s either still in post-production or in the process of being released. Click.
@Nullo
Indeed! We must investigate this mechanism and document its behaviour.
That would be an interesting scientific endeavour. Richard Dawkins is a scientist too, by the way.
@Vunessuh Yeah I saw that as I was posting :).
@Fyrius
Hmm. It would seem that observing and reporting the GADawkins phenomenon alters the likelihood of its implementation.
Gasp! It’s a quantum phenomenon!
Similar to Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle?
Maybe we can wave at it and see?
Shouldn’t we use particles instead of waves?
Well. some of the maybe. I’m not sure.
Maybe we should try both. Just to be sure.
Incidentally, do you remember there once was a time when this thread was about film adaptations?
Neil Hancock’s Circle of Light series would probably make a good movie. It’s like Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and has talking animals.
