I'm wondering why there is so much litter everywhere?

Asked by jonami (137points) March 16th, 2010

I live in a small town of about 50,000, where litter shouldn’t be a very big problem. Yet when walking around the block, there are sometimes up to 3 giant trashbags full. Why is this? What can be done about it?

Because people are pigs.

Your town needs 2 things: Respect and accountability….or a giant vacuum.

This bothers me too in my town. One time, I actually scolded a guy my age for tossing a cigarette into the sand at a beach. He picked it up and apologized, but I was still pissed. I see people flicking their stupid butts everywhere. I once saw a car of people eat fast food in a parking lot, then dump all the trash on the asphalt and drive away. What is wrong with people?!!?! Screw jaywalking tickets – enforce litter fines!

I did not see this problem in Europe.

I rarely see litter anymore. Where do you live?

People are not even conscious of how much trash even inadvertently ends up in any number of places. The street drains are a perfect example. Literally tons of debris gets flushed into our drainage areas and into waterways, rivers and oceans. Not to mention the gathering mountains on the sides of highways. It make me sad and I always try to be aware of even what might fly out of the windows of my car in a stiff breeze.

Each person thinks they are the only one. I once asked a person why he threw trash on the streets, and he told me his taxes pay to keep the streets clean, so why not.

Of course, our taxes no longer go for services, but simply to keep politicians in the style they are accustomed.
