What's with these commercials?
Ok, I’ve noticed recently that commercials that are promoting their products seem to just make you feel worse. Of course the ASPCA commercials are extremely sad, for a reason, but what about those Cymbalta commercials? “I felt like I just had to wind myself up everyday”. Don’t people suffering from depression want to see happy people (even if it’s tacky and sugar coated happiness) who have taken Cymbalta, and whose lives have changed etc… Do those suffering from depression really need to know how depressed that person was, what depression was, and how they had to “wind themselves up everyday” because they were so depressed?
What about those Orajel commercials? People are basically screaming to you through the screen about how they went through excruciating pain from their gums. Sometimes I find these commercials quite funny….and weird. So, what do you think about them? Are there any other commercials out there that you feel the same about? This is a completely random question that just popped into my head one day, and I just wondered if anyone shared this same feeling with me or if I’m just going insane.

That’s why I avoid TV like the plague.
Eh. Commercials are such a can of worms. Corporations behind them don’t care how they make you feel, they just care that you pay attention – even if it’s because you want to cry after seeing those injured dogs. It’s hard to get our attention these days and it’s a vicious circle because our attention spans aren’t helped by constant advertising.
This, this and this get me pissed more than anything else on television. These ads are evil.
I really frackin’ hate Axe and Hardee’s commercials. They are incredibly misogynistic.
But i do like this: one.
This one as well.
@Simone_De_Beauvoir, lulz, one of my lady-friends showed me that commercial and we wound up having a big discussion on the satirical deconstruction of masculine expectations or something like that. Either way, I still think it’s pretty funny.
the Fiber One commercials annoy the crap out of me! “No! That’s not fiber!”
yes it is so deal with it
@filmfann those are the ones we’re talking about – they’re awesome
What about the horrible children in the Dodge Caravan commercials? Makes me think they don’t want to sell them!
I hate those commercials for…oh God, was it Ross or TJ Maxx? I don’t even remember.
The ones that talk about some poor Italian guy’s small business failing so the big department store swooped down and bought all of his stuff at an unfair price so we Americans can buy it cheap. Like they have no shame over their predatory business tactics.
Why the hell would that make me want to shop there?
@squidcake Hate that one too!! It’s the ones I see ALL THE TIME that piss me off!!
Commercials are just ways of the corporations to keep people distracted and keep people thinking they need something(most of the time) Most of them really are not necessary. They have people to do research just to create attention grabbing commercials. It has been contemplated that in the future, people will personalize commercials to make them as intrusive and attention grabbing as possible.
The Carl’s Jr. And Taco Bell commercials are pretty bad. I also hate those “Foundation For a Better Life” preachy ads. But Flo from Progressive makes me want to stick my head in the microwave.
That singing Filet O Fish ad bugs me. I keep my phone on vibrate and every time that one starts I think mine is buzzing.
Let’s face it. Stupid is the new smart.
The worst one for me are the ones that have out of control children. When the son asks for more minutes (he threw away the ones his mom just gave him because they were used) makes my head spin. I know it’s just a commercial, but I want to just snatch that phone out of his hand.
