What are good things that help with or cure hyperemesis?

Asked by shpadoinkle_sue (7188points) March 16th, 2010

My best friend in Utah is pregnnant for the second time and she “feels like death”. I bought her a book called Preganacy Sucks. I think she might have hyperemesis, which is the constant vomiting and naseua. Basically, the worst kind of morning sickness.
She can’t keep anything down, including fluids. I want to help her as much as I can, but I’m a few states west of her. Her family is calling her lazy and her husband’s family is just as bad. Save for one of his sisters and his friends.
What can I tell her or send to her that might help? I’m sending out a care package with the book tomorrow afternoon and I’d like to get things that I know will work, besides drugs. She’s really not into taking them. Suggestions?

Peppermint tea, ginger tea?

@faye Thank you, that’s on my list to get at the store. I was thinking maybe some protein supplements, too. Do those exist? She’s thrown up EVERYTHING.

I had a nurse friend that had to finally have intravenus therapy and a drug I don’t remember the name of, her whole pregnancy. She was in hospital a couple of times as she would get so dehydrated. All well in the end though.

My daughter in law had to go in the hospital on intravenous feeding twice because of the same thing. The last time was two full weeks.

She’s got an IV that a nurse comes and changes.
