Does anyone else notice the noise?

Asked by Pandora (32436points) March 17th, 2010

I have a fluorescent light bulb that went out and I’ve noticed that when they go out it makes a very slight sound if you turn the power on and the light bulb is gone. Does anyone else hear it? My husband doesn’t but he is slightly deaf and doesn’t understand why it bugs me so. The pitch is really irritating to my ears.
So actually, I just want to know if anyone else has ever heard it and why does it make that sound if its not functioning?

I hear a noise from a fluorescent bulb that makes noise when it is in the socket, and y’know, working.

I have a fluorescent lamp over my drafting table that makes the same noise.I usually have music blasting so I can’t hear it—but I know it’s theeeeerrrrreeee—;)

I heard that noise all through high school. Even if there was a bulb in the socket, I could still hear it all damn day. I’m not sure why it does it, but it does. And I want to rip it out of the ceiling.

Yes, I hear it, bulb in or not. @rangerr like you I heard it all though school, irritated me a lot.
I also hear the TV when it isn’t on and anything plugged in with an instant on feature.
Am I ultra sensitive? I don’t know.

I always figured perhaps power going through electrical equipment can make a kind of ringing noise but if your equipment is still making noise and its not plugged in than it might be you just have ringing in the ear.

I only notice it when it’s plugged in. If it is turned off but has an instant on, like most TVs nowdays, then I hear the buzzing/ringing.

I used to hear them, but I don’t think my hearing’s as good as it used to be.

I hear the “mmmmmmmmm” when it’s turned on and then off I also hear the ”eeeeeeeeeeee it makes untill it cools off… Is that the sound?

wilma's avatar

I hear that “eeeeeeeeeeeee” sound from nearly all electronics that are plugged in.
When the power goes out at my house, the silence is bliss.

Inside the bulb you are likely hearing the capacitor discharging too- And do you hear a mouse too?
