Does my computer really have a virus?

Asked by Peinrikudo (235points) March 17th, 2010

So, last night, my Windows Defender turned on and said I have spyware, trojans, etc, etc, and it would not stop advertising this, and the only way to get rid of the aforementioned was to upgrade my defender for a minimal fee of $50 for a 6 month subscription. On my guest account, however, the computer functions properly, but on my own account, Defender goes crazy, slows down my programs because they are “infected” and it’s driving me nuts because I’m not really that great with this kind of stuff, so how do I find out if it’s really a virus on my computer(I have used several programs to scan my computer for all the virus and trojans and none of them have found anything save for Defender) or if Windows Defender is just trying to pressure me into an update?

Bite the bullet, get Vipre antivirus for $30.00USD and turn stupid Defender off. Been there, done this! ;)

Thank you! I will give that a try!

That is 30 bucks a year for each PC (for Vipre).
I haven’t tried it…

What I use is http://www.prevx.com/ also 30 bucks per year. It’s anti-malware (aka anti-anything). Vipre seems similar. It’s where the industry is moving to.

Get a mac. :) I just made the switch… I’m going to marry this machine.

@silverfly

The only reason I got this one was because it’s all I can afford atm. However, I resolved the problem. I made another administrator account and deleted the other one.

Looks like you’ve temporarily solved the problem.
There are plenty of free antivirus solutions, such as AVG and Avast, and TrendMicro’s HouseCall.

@Peinrikudo Yeah, Macs are really pricy. No doubt about it. I had to go with the Mac mini because it’s all I could afford. Glad you figured it out though!

Thanks! This time I’ll be ready for any virus! >:)
