What is the best way to ripen fruit at home?

Lately at the grocery store, they’ve been selling really sour fruit. Usually, it ripens alright, but recently, the plums and peaches I’ve bought have actually gone rotten and mushy while they still tasted unripe.
I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong, but if people could tell me the best way to make sure fruit ripens before it goes bad, perhaps I could troubleshoot or try something new. I hate wasting fruit.

Don’t purchase out-of-season fruit that is raised in South America. it has to be picked before it is ripe, and the types of fruit you mentioned cannot really be ripened.
Put the unripened fruit in a bag with bananas. Bananas are heavily gased with ripening agents. That’s why they turn so quickly. The bananas will continue to give off gas and this will help the other fruit ripen if they are enclosed with them.
it could be that the fruit is just not the best quality at the moment. maybe letting the fruit ripen at room temperature could sweeten them. and probably also what marinelife said.
@marinelife Really? I once heard that the only fruit that did not continue to ripen after it was picked was a pineapple. Granted, you said “really be ripened.” which I take to mean that they won’t ripen properly. Hmmm.
I wonder if that’s why some mangoes get so mushy and poor.
add an apple. maybe a pinapple does the same thing. Experiment with pectin
@AstroChuck is right. Put the fruit in a paper bag with bananas. It works. It’s like magic, or chemistry or something. Try it, really.
