What cars do you think the market undervalues?

Asked by palbertq (258points) March 17th, 2010

Honda accords are great reliable cars. However a lot of people realize that and the market price reflects that.

I think Saturns are undervalued. They aren’t pretty. They are pretty reliable, and you can easily find a 10yr old for <3k.

The Mitsubishi Magna was, until it was canned. Their sales were bad because of their poor resale value, but that is precisely what makes them a great second hand car. They are reliable, adequately quick, and very comfortable.

The Smart Fortwo, due to many misconceptions. The mileage is awesome.

Oh, and the VW Corrado VR6.

In Europe I’d have to say the entire SEAT range of cars. What people dont realise is that they are VW if you peel back the skin. The Ibiza is just a repackaged Polo, the Leon a repackaged Golf, & the new Exeo is a combination of an Audi A5 & the new Passat. Awesome cars at a fraction of the price.

@drfunko I had no idea the Smart had a model name. I’ve only heard them called Smart Car.

Those are rare enough in my area that when I saw two pass each other, they honked their horns, excited to see their own kind!

The Smart is definitely undervalued in the US. They are great little cars. My business partner bought one last year; 48 mpg and only $17k fully loaded. She loves it.

Almost all diesel cars are undervalued in the US, probably due to GMs producing those crappy ones in the 70s. M-B diesels are wonderful cars, but the low-line models are no longer offered in the US. Built like a tank, very good fuel economy, low maintenace and adequate performance. My 1972 220D and 1962 190D both have over 500k miles on the odometer and still going strong.

Anything Toyota right now.

@JeffVader I’ve got to second that, I love the look of the Octavia RS, and with a Golf GTI engine it would go hard while being economical too.

JeffVader's avatar

@FireMadeFlesh Exactly, Skoda are ace cars now & just like SEAT they’ve VW’s under the body panels…. just think a Skoda RS is about 90% of an Audi S4, only a quarter of the price :)

FireMadeFlesh's avatar

@JeffVader I’m just waiting for a Skoda version of the Scirocco R – then we’ll be in business!

If you’re talking used cars, Subaru and Mazda tend to be undervalued. I’d need to know more about what you’re looking for to be more specific than that. Also, Ford Escorts from the 1990s are great cars for people who want economical beaters. You can get one for less than half what you’d pay for a Toyota or Honda of comparable age and mileage.

@jaytkay Smart tried to make a four-seater car, I think it was called the Forfour. It failed miserably because it wasn’t unique like the Fortwo, it was just another sedan.

ShiningToast's avatar

@IchtheosaurusRex Mazda yes, but in my experience Subaru’s hold their values extremely well.

@Cruiser Not sure where you are, but In Australia Toyotas are over valued. Hold their value because all the people who aren’t interested in cars buy them. Fire Made Flesh is correct- Magna is the most undervalued car on the market. I’m on my third one.

@FireMadeFlesh Now that would be one hell of a buy!!!
