Are you celebrating Norooz, and if so how? If not, would you like to learn about it?

Asked by La_chica_gomela (12594points) March 18th, 2010

Norooz is Persian New Year. It falls on the Vernal (Spring) Equinox, usually March 21. More info

I’m going to celebrations at the homes of several friends, and I think we’re going to eat, drink, and just sit on the patio and enjoy the sunshine. I’m looking forward to it!

Any particular foods associated with Norooz?

An Iranian friend of mine on Facebook posted this video about Norooz I really didn’t know that much about it. It says it is an Eid festival? Have I got that right? I though Eid was a specific holiday celebrated at or as the end of Ramadan? Have I got that right? What is the difference?

I’ve heard of it but we don’t celebrate it. I hope you have a happy Norooz though!

@lillycoyote: Not really, Ramadan ended September 9, 2009. It’s completely unrelated to Norooz. “Eid” is an Arabic word, that in Farsi, means “holiday” in general.

I would like to experience new culture. Tell me when you want to celebrate that again!.

@La_chica_gomela Yeah, I just heard what I though was the word Eid on the video and wasn’t sure what the connection was. That is the only context in which I understand what Eid is. So in Farsi, it basically means “holiday.” That’s good to know.

No.. I celebrate Ostara, which is essentially the Pagan celebration of the same thing. :)

No, and not really, but I wish a happy one nonetheless XD

Nope. Though I do use the Equinox as a handy seasonal marker. It gives you something to count down to while you freeze to death in January.

Sounds like a typical Saturday for me.

I think we’re going to eat the flesh of our enemies, drink the blood of infidels, and just sit on the patio and enjoy watching their homes burn.

I’m looking forward to it!

Persian New Year Festivals are more fun and more joyous and gentle than any I have ever had to attend for any other culture, including my own.
