Why the lion is the king of jungle not the tiger?

Asked by Your_Majesty (8238points) March 19th, 2010

As we know many people like to assume lion as the king of the jungle, some say it’s tiger. We know that lion do not live in jungle(except the Asiatic lion, and they’re not the biggest anyway). Tiger live in jungle, and they’re far bigger and stronger. In reality the fight between this two creature will most likely be won by the tiger(assume both from the same sex,the biggest sub species, same condition, etc). So why many people tend to say that lion is the king of jungle? Don’t tell me it’s because they posses the mane that makes them look like kings).

PS:I never encourage fight between species,we just need to make rational prediction.

The lion has a posse

I’m not sure – considering it’s the females who do all of the hunting, raise the babies and take care of things in general. The question should be: Why aren’t lionesses and tigresses QUEENS of the jungle??

gorillapaws's avatar

@DrasticDreamer because they all sleep with the Alpha lion…

Your_Majesty's avatar

@DrasticDreamer Many people debate about the title of the king. Not many people debate about the title of the queen(and that would be a different question). Although The National Geographic said that ‘Leopardess’ is the queen of jungle.

I believe people associate the magnificent mane of the male lion as resembling the elaborate collars on the garb of British Royalty.

What do you think about this idea?

njnyjobs's avatar

Courage is the lion’s major advantage. It is true that, when lions and tigers meet in reserves, tigers sometimes submit to lions. Male lions can seem more aggressive, and naturally take control over the situation, like a true king. And when they fight, they don’t easily back down, they fight with a stubborn desire to win, which presents as another advantage. But the reason for this is not that tigers are cowards, they are simply trying to avoid an unnecessary fight.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

Because the Lion lays around and acts like a King. Everybody else does the work and all he has to do is fuck and roar every once in a while. Tigers are too busy earning their stripes. Nothing Kingly about that at all.

If size is your concern, then better consult your friendly neighborhood elephant bull.

Your_Majesty's avatar

@Dr_Lawrence I think that’s irrational according to the reality.

davidbetterman's avatar

Actually, the elephant is the king of the jungle.

Your_Majesty's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies and @davidbetterman It’s about the fight between tiger and lion(carnivore) as many people refer these two creature as the king of jungle. Not the elephant.

LIGER is the king of the jungle!

Interesting thought that. Because where do the lions live except in captivity? I mean here any way (Africa). We have a lion park up the road and “hells bells” in real life their paws are massive. I know because they were on our windscreen. Are you sure they are not the Kings?, if the tigers paw is bigger well, I don’t know. So anyway, lions live on ranges, game parks we don’t have any jungle that I am aware of? Interesting question.

This is the Big one. The question who would win in a fight between a lion and a tiger is one of life’s great questions.

First of all for this fight I will use the Bengal Tiger, instead of the much larger Siberian Tiger, so we can give the poor Lion a chance. The fact is that the Lion still would have no shot. The Tiger is just a far superior animal. It is stronger and faster. It hunts bigger prey and doesn’t need the help of something called a pride. Pride? The Lion should be ashamed.

Pretty_Lilly's avatar

Actually he is the “PIMP” of the jungle,,he just lays there and lets his ladies go out and hunt for him.

Just_Justine's avatar

@La_Perm perhaps it would be the relevant size of each? or what they are protecting all that? Maybe then the answer does simply lie in their size? (and ability to win).

whitenoise's avatar

Because lions live like kings: they are visible with a flock of servants. Doing basically nothing at all, but claiming to be the best. Very king-like.

Now tigers… they live solitary and you don’t see them. They hunt for themselves and are not so much into display. I think a group of lions is a lot more impressive than a solitary tiger.

You don’t really think that our own kings are the toughest fighters, either, do you? They are the ones that control a group as do lions, not tigers.

La_Perm's avatar

@Just_Justine Both species are equal in size. Even if Tiger is larger and heavier it still as fast and as agile as other tiger with normal attribute.

Your_Majesty's avatar

@whitenoise Of course the king should be the strongest. I’m not sure that the way lion live will make him as king. Will you say that a pigeon is the king of birds compare to an eagle just because it live in flock?(I know we’re not talking about this, this is simply an example). As an addition, there could be more than one male(king) in a group of lion, There’s no kingdom with two or more than one king, right?

@Doctor_D
If you can find a single pigeon that gets to control the rest of the flock, then hell yeah….

The Pigeon, King of the (urban) jungle.

JeffVader's avatar

I’m not entirely sure there is a rational reason for this…. I suspect it’s more historical than anything.

A lion could totally beat up a tiger. Just sayin’

Both of these animals are powerful and fierce carnivores. But scientists say that in a fight between a Bengal tiger and an African lion, there is a 90% chance that the tiger will win.

It is a well-known fact that tigers are the biggest cats in the world. Not only this, but tigers are noticeably more muscular, and better fighters. It is actually a myth that lions are better fighters than tigers, because tigers compete with each other for territory just as much as lions fight for a pride. Tigers also have experience fighting with many animals; Bengal tigers can easily kill large crocodiles and black bears, and Siberian tigers have been known to attack and kill huge adult brown bears. Tigers have been noticed as better fighters because they are more swift, agile, fierce, and have better eye-coordination. They have a stronger jaw force and paw-swipe. However, it is not true that tigers have longer fangs than lions. The skulls of these two cats have been compared, and usually their canines are about the same.

The term “King” comes from the fact that a lion’s mane looks like a crown, and the fact that they rule a pride. A lion’s mane can offer it protection from bites to the neck. This is especially helpful when facing hyenas, which have a very deadly bite. However, a tiger will not always go for the lion’s neck, but instead will usually attack it’s limbs, eyes, head, and face. And the difference between the two cats’ lifestyles adds on to which is more intelligent: Living a solitary life results in the tiger being more cunning. The tiger also hunts larger prey than the lion. The largest prey that lions hunt is the African buffalo, a species of African cattle. Tigers, however, are excellent at hunting gaur, which is the largest type of cattle in the world. There are also differences in the way the two animals fight. Lions tend to stand on three legs, and use one paw to fight. Tigers normally balance on their hind legs and use both front paws to fight, giving them a huge advantage. Tigers also use “trickery”, keep their heads back, and use well thought-out moves when fighting, while lions are known for blindly charging. Another important feature in how well the animals fight is the way their bodies are built. Lions are built more stiffly than tigers, and their bodies are more compact. Lions sometimes appear more muscular in the forelimbs, but tigers simply have more fur covering their muscles, so they are harder to see. Tigers also have more flexible muscles then lions.

The lion DOES have an advantage though: courage. Lions are braver, and less likely to back down from a fight. There have been reports of tigers submitting to lions when they meet in reserves, so they can avoid injury. But if the lion refuses to leave the tiger alone, than the tiger is probably going to end up victorious. Within the Bengal tiger scientists found a most disturbing ferocity. When it comes to the decision to fight, this cat attacks violently, most often winning in any fight against a lion.

In the end, the tiger’s agility and accuracy comes out on top. 80% of experts agree that the tiger is the dominate cat. But not only National Geographic reporters say so. There are many polls on the internet where people can vote on who they think would win, and one can see that many more people bet on the tiger than the lion.

SOURCES: National Geographic, Discovery Channel, PBS nature.

Animal Planet tried to prove that the lion was a better fighter, but they eventually submitted to National Geographic, which is a bigger company. They admitted to National Geographic that they simply preferred lions over tigers.

I suppose that for a long time, people erroneously believed that lions were jungle-dwelling creatures.

ucme's avatar

Because the lion is serene & has other qualities befitting of a king.Wheras the tiger can’t keep it’s dick in it’s pants, against regal protocol at the very least.

What about King Henry VIII?

That is a wonderfully comical song by Herman’s Hermits, you uncultured heathen. ~
