Do you have or know someone who has Tattoos which cannot be covered ?

Asked by Pretty_Lilly (4660points) March 19th, 2010

I understand people getting cool tatts seen when they are shirtless or wearing skimpy outfits
“BUT” I have always wondered about people who get tattoos on their forearms,hands,neck and face,,,,,
Ok! ,cool while hanging out with friends or at clubs !
Don’t they feel awkward or severely out of place when they go to a fancy restaurant or a classy establishment ? Don’t they get dirty looks from people and be mistaken for a criminal?

One of the guys I work with has tattoos on his knuckles. The tattoo was for his ex-wife and now that they are exs he had to get the other set of knuckles tattooed to match. People always stare at him especially at work.

My self on the other hand only have tattoos that can be hidden under clothes.

I know someone with a tattoo on the their leg and they wear shorts all the time so it’s always visible. It’s also always red and inflamed around it. (It’s probably just because it’s new, though).

Tattoos = not my thing…

I have tatts that sit on my arm, but they can also be covered by my shirt. I have short sleeves. And I and have no problem going into places with them showing. If I were going to be embarressed having them in a visual place, then I wouldn’t have them.

I think that when you get a visible tattoo you are choosing to send a specific message about who you are. That message may be somewhat different to different groups of people, but one should not be naive about the message that one is sending.

I dated a man once who had a bar code tattooed across the back of his upper neck so he always wore a tee shirt underneath any other shirt he was wearing. He was also heavily tattooed up and down both arms (sleeves) and had a multitude of other body tats including HUGE letters across width of his chest that spelled, RAGE. Some of these tats he had done while very young and he didn’t enjoy much to show them off or advertise them so he was often fully covered even in warm weather. In fact, we went to visit a longtime friend of his who’d never seen him in a short sleeve t-shirt and the friend came and asked me just how much of his friend’s body was covered, he was shocked. My own tattoo is small and covered by clothes but I do wish I could have it removed entirely.

When I was young I wanted tattoos, but I could never afford them. Now I’m glad that I never got any.

Why give a shit what other people think.

I have a tattoo on my hand. No one even notices it- truly. Hubbs has arm tattoos and routinely gets compliments on them from people in all social classes. He keeps them covered at work but beyond that- they’re out there.

We have never had an issue going to a nice restaurant, hotel, function or church. If we did, then I would be shocked. It’s not done to be so rude in polite company. Why would you want one of your guests/clients/friends to feel uncomfortable? Doesn’t make business sense.

I used to work with a woman who had gorgeous full color tattoos all over her forearms and legs. I never thought much of anything about it. However if you have prison style tattoos, or tattoos glorifying hate and violence in general, you better believe I’m judging you. I’m assuming you are a violent person, a criminal, and cannot be trusted because that is the message you are clearly sending.

I once had a tree fall on my house and do major roof damage. Every other day some new fly by night contractor would knock on my door and offer to give me an estimate. One of them had tattoos on his face, neck, and hands. I don’t recall the exact tattoos and whether they were prison style or violent in nature, but they were one or the other or both. Dude, sorry, but those tattoos may have been fine when you worked construction yourself, but they’re a huge mistake when you’re trying to be a contractor on your own. A contractor’s first task is to overcome the trust hurdle that homeowners have from all the stories of shady contractors out there, and I’m sure as heck not going to write a huge check to a guy that looks like he just walked out of Rikers and trust him to do major work on my home.

My ex has degrees in Philosophy, Psychology and Theology as well as being an ex priest and presently a fine poet and writer, that is who he is and what he feels like when he goes into any public place rather than identifying with the inked body under his clothes. He never shied away from taking us into nice places and I don’t recall anyone giving us funny looks if some of his ink “peeked” out.

@Neizvestnaya “WHY” are you quoting me as if I’m stating that is the right thing to do !!
Example !! I know a educated black family who vacations in a upscale region of New Hampshire !
They have a good time but they claim that now and then they get dirty looks from people !
Is it right to judge a person by the color of their skin !! “NO” but it happens !!! Quite often !!
By the way I have no desire to hear any PC BS from you,,,of how you are color blind and do not have a prejudice bone in you body !

@Pretty_Lilly
I purposefully didn’t quote you with your screen name because I wanted to use the words from another perspective and from experience because we had gone to very nice places and he is an example of an exceptionally heavily tattooed person.

@Pretty_Lilly I was not being sarcastic nor bitter when I said “why give a shit what other people think?”. It was a sincere, straight forward question. If i had phrased it “I do not concern myself with what other people may think of me based on my appearance” would that have been more acceptable to you? Ruffled your feathers a little less? I’m sorry if it has never occurred to you that not everyone worries about what the average Joe on the street thinks of them, especially when it’s based on something as trivial as tattoos.

My sister’s entire left arm is covered in ink. She works in the club scene so it’s not like she sticks out like a sore thumb there.
We don’t hang out often, but I do see her for birthdays and such. She has always had a tendency to wear sweaters (even before the tattoos). So it’s typically mostly covered up anyway when we go to a restaurant.
She doesn’t really seem to care about what people think of it though.

One of the security guards where I work has pretty much every inch of his body tattoo’d including his head. He can cover most of it up bt there is always something on show!

tinyfaery's avatar

You can cover ant tattoo that is not on your face. Having said that. My arms, including one forearm, are tattooed and I never feel out of place. But I do live in a place where people don’t really care about tattoos much.

casheroo's avatar

Technically, I can cover up all my tattoos..but I have no need to. I have wrist tattoos, and inner upper arm tattoo, a neck tattoo (my hair mainly covers it) My husband has a lot more visible arm tattoos than I do.

I do not ever feel awkward because of my tattoos, I do not even try to hide them when on job interviews because I’d rather they know upfront than be surprised, plus I like to know their policy on them..some places don’t mind, and others do. And when I had my lip ring, I left it in for interviews as well and they would tell me if it was allowed or not.

My husband works in a fine dining restaurant, and is allowed to have his exposed.. he says people ask what they mean, but nothing else. And yes, he has been denied a job because of his tattoos..some corporate restaurants won’t even hire you.

People can think whatever they want of me, just for having tattoos…if they really want to judge based on something like that well, thats their problem not mine.

I’ve got a small tattoo of a spider on my wrist that probably isn’t an inch wide/long. Its easily covered by makeup. I don’t bother covering it much, either.
Who cares if someone else doesn’t like it? Unless I’m going to work, I don’t really give a flip.

I sure as hell don’t want to attend any of this ‘classy’ establishments you speak of and give two craps if they think people with tattoos are criminals.

ragingloli's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir
But they are! Remember? Chakotay was a Maquis terrorist! And the evil Romulan caricatures in the recent 2009 Star Dreck had tattoos too!

@ragingloli Hush, you’re going to tell on me.
