Suggestions for kids music that is cool AND child like?
we are having a 4 year old themed birthday party for 20 somethings. having trouble with the play list. the music we have looked at so far (raffi, barney…) either is too campy or has kids singing – or is cool but doesn’t sound very child like. do you know any music that would be BOTH child like AND cool?

They Might Be Giants. They were cool when I was a teen and now they make cool music for my age cohorts’ children
@elenuial I agree with you on Disney, but not most of their new stuff.
Or this!
This is part of the CD I made for 5 years olds:
Michael Franti: What I Be, Say Hey, Hello Bonjour
Paul Simon: Call Me Al
The Monkees: Daydream Believer, Listen to the Band, Theme Song
The Beatles: OobLaDi
Sarah McLaughlin: Ice Cream
Jack Johnson: Almost anything from the Sing Alongs CD
Irene Cara: Flashdance
James Taylor: You’ve Got a Friend
Bob Schneider: Moon Song
Kenny Loggins: Footloose
Jackson 5: ABC
@aprilsimnel‘s suggestion is awesome.
i like elizabeth mitchell (of indie band ‘ida’ fame.) also, didn’t jack johnson do a record for curious george a few years back?
alternately, just play grown-up music. or old timey jazz, something swingy. everyone likes that.
@nomtastic The Jack Johnson is called Sing Alongs and Lullabyes… I’m almost positive it’s the Curious George one. The whole thing is great for kids, and totally listen-able for adults.
I am a big fan of The Roches….three sisters that sing the most exquisite harmonies. They’ve been around a long time and have a very loyal following for their adult music. They released an album (very quirky) in 1994 which is still available called “Will you Be My Friend?” and it won the Parent’s Gold Choice Award that year. I would check it out——it’s kids music with lovely harmonies and catchy (not syrupy) tunes. It’s an album that is made for kids, but extremely tongue in cheek and sure to please adults, too.(Read the reviews at Amazon.)
If you are doing a mix tape with: Melanie’s “Brand New Pair of Roller Skates” is a nice song (Can’t remember the exact title.)
And also the fantastic soundtrack that is sung by Carole King to “Really Rosie”...great lyrics, uplifting (and sometimes funny songs). You could distribute the lyrics and everyone could sing along….“There once was a boy named Pierre….who only could say, ‘I don’t care!” It’s great.
