Some pastas have numbers. What do those numbers signify?

Asked by Ltryptophan (12091points) March 20th, 2010

After a tour of Rome last summer, and lots of pasta consumed, I figured out that pasta has these numbers on it. I suppose its size, but does it mean anything else? Why didn’t american pasta companies keep up with the pasta numbering?

Yep, it’s about the size.

I guess you don’t see that in America because there are not that many varieties. I spent a semester in Milan, and the supermarket had an aisle only for the pasta.

@bob_ Yes, size does matter.

@lillycoyote I’m not worried.

Thicker and thinner versions. E.G. number ten is extremely thin, number 6 is the common type of spagehetti etc.

I think it is like zephyrae said- it has to do with size and thickness of the pasta.

(sorry if I got your name wrong, but do not know where it ends and the joke begins).
