What to do about ruined hair?

Asked by delam (358points) March 21st, 2010

Hi, I took a long time to grow my hair out and then when to get it died from black to brown. The stylist didn’t know what she was doing and completely fried my hair. Now it’s like burnt red. My hair is naturally very glossy and wavy and now it’s like something totally foreign to me. I really don’t want to cut it off because I love long hair but I don’t know what to do. Any advice? Thanks.

Cut it very short and stay away from harsh colorants. Yours is not the first such story I have heard.

Over-processed hair is horrible to deal with. You may be able to get some relief by using hot oil treatments to put moisture back in your hair. You should call around and find a better salon, and have them access how bad the damage is to your hair. You will probably have to cut it short and start over.

Ask not what your country can do for you, but who you can sue.

Is the color burnt red, or is that the texture? Go to your local beauty supply and buy a damaged hair treatment product

Step 1: never get your hair coloured at SuperCuts or by someone you found on CraigsList

Step 2: find a good stylist (ask your friends, look on Angie’s List, etc.)

Step 3: Be not afraid of starting over. Damaged hair is just that – damaged. You’ll probably have to go short for a while. Summer is upon us, though! Think how lovely and cool it will be!

Use good shampoo and conditioner(or other hair repairment product) to cure and strengthen your hair for some necessary time. When you get your healthier hair you can find another much better hair stylist to make it better.

I have recently recovered from the same issue. But mine was worse. I went from blonde to dark, then blonde, then dark, ugh! You have no idea.

My hair is in pretty good nick now and it’s only a few months. Here are the remedies I tried.

mayonnaise pack. Yes just normal mayonnaise from your fridge. Comb through and leave on for about an hour. Cover the head with a heated towel, you can do this by putting in the micro wave (damp) and keep reheating.

Have a good trim, you may have to go a fair bit shorter, but the trim will really help and your hair will grow better anyway.

Take a vitamin with biotin daily.

Try where you can to let your hair dry naturally. If you still need a hair dryer use heat protector products.

Deep condition with a moisture pack twice a week.

Get some shine products that cover the hair shaft with a sheen, it helps to make hair look better and evens out cuticles.

I find M label has a great shine shampoo which also makes hair look healthier.

After a month or so, you can have it coloured again to deal with the red colour you have now, but ask the hairdresser to use none damaging pigment colours like a brown colour rinse. As the red colour is a dead give away for hair that has not been coloured correctly.

My hair is naturally a dark auburn color and is fairly curly…its been everything from black to blond to red for the last 8 years….

I was blond and wanted to go back to my natural color and the hairdresser COMPLETELY screwed my hair up (much like how you described)

Some products that really helped me were AVEDA’s damage remedy treatment, and VIVANT’s revitafoam.

Try to only shampoo your hair twice a week when you can, and try to avoid straightening and blow drying as much as possible….BUT be patient, my hair has taken about 10ish months to look good enough for people to comment on it again.

Go to a highly reputable salon and tell them you need color correction. This does not necessarily mean the most expensive – find somewhere with color specialists who have been concentrating in that area for a long time. It is much more than just recoloring your hair to the shade you want. They should also be able to repair some of the damage. It will be pricey, but I would pay it if your hair is important to you.

Dying often leads to dead hair, or hair that is dieing. Sorry. Best not to mess with Mother Nature.

This is how I was able to get shine back into my hair.
1. Wash your hair with Pantene color revival shampoo and use the conditioner as well.(btw, I’ve tried all sorts of shampoos on the market and this is the only shampoo I have found to really live up to its reputation. It really leaves a high shine on my hair.)
2. Wash in cool water and rinse in cold.
3. Don’t blow dry you hair the first few times you wash. If you must, than towel dry the best you can, air dry for a while till half the moisture is gone and then blow dry on a cool setting. (no heat)
4. Take vitamin E suppliments for a while. That will help from the inside out. It won’t necessarily help already grown hair but it will help the hair that is growing plus I think the oil from your scalp will be healthier and will aid in adding shine to your hair.
5. Trim off any bad ends.
