Who has access to fluther private messages?

I came across someone who was wanting a mod to notice, what appeared to them to be, harassment happening through private messages.
This has me to thinking about the privacy of private messages.
Can a mod look into the private messages on any given account? Are deleted messages stored?

If my memory serves me right, I believe it is: the two people directly involved, the moderators, and the founders. I could be wrong.
Better delete that message with the bank robbery plans.
From what I was told a while ago, only Andrew and Augustlan can read pms. Don’t know if this has changed at all.
I was told that it was possible for someone to read pms in cases where there is harassment or other malfeasance alleged. In general, however, they don’t read anything. A) there’s too much and B) they aren’t interested. However, if you are planning to rob a bank, it’s best to keep your correspondence off of fluther and encrypted, as well. Not that I recommend you rob a bank. But if you do, I get 10%. Ok. You drive a hard bargain. I’ll take 5. One, if you insist, but I can’t go any lower.
[mod says:] Not all mods have access to PMs. Ben, Andrew and Tim can see them. Augustlan, the community manager, can see them. Regular mods cannot. Even then, Bendrewim and Auggie don’t go look at them unless they have a reason to. If a user brings something to their attention they’ll likely look into it, but they don’t go snooping through PMs by any means. Your PMs are private unless you alert them about something (or someone else has brought something to their attention regarding you).
Just curious. Not plotting anything… just wondering… not paranoid about anything, really. I don’t even know what a bank heist would look like…
My messages to Captain_Fantasy have nothing to do with anything and wundayatta trying to change previously agreed upon terms… no one I know on fluther wants to rob anything or take over anything… so anyway… don’t mind me… slinking away
All of this is good to know. Thanks, Allie.
Occasionally I have gotten some truly nasty (and often nonsensical) PMs. I copy, paste and send them to the Contact contact, on top menu bar at right, next to Google search window. Contact contact then emails me.
Just out of curiosity, how exactly do they go about reading PM’s?
For example, every time they PM someone, are other messages that person has received already there, or do they have to click a button to view them? Are they already in plain site when they visit someone’s profile or are they hidden away until they click something? Perhaps a tab or whatever…
[mod says:] @Vunessuh If you’re asking about PMs you get from a mod, then this is how it works: You know how when you send a PM you see a check box underneath that gives you the option of making it public or private? Well, mods have another box next to it that gives us the option to send the PM “as a mod” (if we’re modding) or we can uncheck it and send it as a regular user (normal jelly-to-jelly correspondence). When we send the PM “as a mod” then it is visible to all other mods when they look at that user’s PMs. We can’t see PMs sent as a regular user unless they are public. (Well, the founders and Auggie can, but normal mods can’t.) So, yes, mods see PMs sent by other mods. They are automatically visible. BUT… if you are asking whether mods can see private PMs sent jelly-to-jelly, then I can’t answer how that would look. I can’t see jelly-to-jelly PMs unless they are public. If this is what you were wondering, then one of the founders or Augustlan would be able to answer your question better than I can. I sent Auggie a link to this part of the question so she can answer.
While Ben and Tim could see PMs, Andrew and I are the only ones who ever really look into PM issues… and only if there is a problem. When we click on your profile page, we don’t automatically see them. We have to go to a special page to view them, so they’re not just sitting there out in the ‘open’ so to speak. Also, we take your privacy very seriously. We wouldn’t reveal anything we see there to anyone else.
Notice who had the right info and didn’t get any lurve. Just sayin’
@janbb I hate it when that happens.
@janbb: I’m part of your Booster squad also. xox Milo
Thanks Allie and Auggie. We appreciate it. :)
